Video shows horrifying on-field collision between Spanish striker and goalkeeper that left soccer player dead
Disturbing footage has emerged of the moment a Spanish soccer player suffered a horrifying on-field collision with a goalkeeper.
CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died on Tuesday (November 3), a day after sustaining head and chest injuries during a match against FC Andorra.
A video shared on X shows the collision unfolding during stoppage time at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López on Monday (November 2).
With the score tied at 2-2, Tenerife played a long ball up the field, sending De Miguel chasing into open space.
Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono came out of his goal as well, jumping forward and crashing into De Miguel inside the center circle.
The striker collapsed onto the field and lay motionless as players from both teams urgently called for medical assistance.
Referee Manuel Ángel Pérez Hernández formally abandoned the match in the 108th minute.
Medical staff treated De Miguel before he was taken by ambulance and transported to Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz.
Jesús de Miguel dies after his condition deteriorates
On Monday, De Miguel was in intensive care, and Tenerife described his condition as "stable but serious".
However, his neurological condition deteriorated early Tuesday morning, and the club confirmed that he had died at 8AM local time.
"Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda," a club statement said.
"There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can lessen this overwhelming sadness. We stand with his grieving family, with his loved ones, with all of Tenerife who mourn this cruel loss today."
De Miguel's death prompted an outpouring of tributes from the Spanish soccer world, including some of the sport's biggest names.
The former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, Andorra’s majority shareholder, expressed his heartbreak on social media, writing: "I am so deeply sorry. Rest in peace, Jesús."
Andorra also sent their "most sincere condolences" to De Miguel’s family, teammates and Tenerife.
Real Madrid and Barcelona were among the clubs that paid tribute to the striker, while Real Madrid's players observed a minute of silence before Tuesday's training session.
"Immense sadness, there are no words," Madrid's French forward Kylian Mbappe wrote on Instagram.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) also issued a statement mourning his death: "Shattered by this sad news, the Royal Spanish Football Federation wishes to express our deepest sorrow at his passing today."
The RFEF postponed Tuesday's matches in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina, "as a gesture of respect and solidarity".
La Liga president Javier Tebas and Spanish sports minister Milagros Tolon also posted messages of condolence.
"Today we all share the terrible pain of an irreparable loss," Tebas penned on X, while Tolon added: "I deeply regret the passing of Jesús de Miguel, player of CD Tenerife.
"My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and a strong embrace to the club, players, technical staff, management, and fans during these difficult times. We share in your grief," she added.
De Miguel joined CD Tenerife in the summer of 2025 from Castellón. He helped the team gain promotion to the second division.
The forward started his career at Leganés at the youth level in the Madrid suburbs, playing for several teams, including Unionistas de Salamanca, before joining Castellón in 2023.
Our thoughts are with De Miguel's loved ones at this time.
