Award-winning soap opera star Steve Burton has been let go from General Hospital after refusing to get the Covid vaccine.
The actor, who has played Jason Morgan on the show for 29 years, confirmed in an Instagram video on Tuesday, November 23, that he had been fired by network ABC after nearly three decades.
"I wanted you to hear it from me personally," Burton, 51, told his followers. "Unfortunately, General Hospital has let me go because of the vaccine mandate.
"I did apply for my medical and religious exemptions and both of those were denied, which hurts. But this is also about personal freedom to me. I don't think anybody should lose their livelihood over this."
The actor went on to reflect on the soap, which he has been appearing on since 1992.
"I'll always be thankful for my time at General Hospital. I love it there. I grew up there.
"Maybe one day if these vaccine mandates are lifted, I can return and finish my career as Jason Morgan. That would be an honor. And if not, I'm going to take this amazing experience, move forward, and be forever grateful."
ABC confirmed that Burton had been let go due to his non-compliance over their vaccine policy, Sky News reports.
All General Hospital Zone A cast members were required to be vaccinated by November 1, 2021. Zone A encompasses all actors and staff actively working on the set.
Burton's exit comes just weeks after his co-star Ingo Rademacher was fired for railing against the vaccine on social media.
Since announcing the news, there has been an outpouring of support for Burton on social media from fans and fellow cast members.
"It takes lotta guts I will miss you," wrote Burton's co-star Maurice Benard. "Love you Stevie," added co-star Chad Duell.
"Classy until the end...so very sad to hear this...you sir will be missed," commented a fan.
