Netflix viewers have been left terrified and stunned after feasting their eyes on the latest horror film, The Unholy.

The Unholy was initially released two years ago, but it officially joined the streaming giant this month, and those who have dared to watch it have revealed that they have resorted to hiding behind their sofas.

It is based on the 1983 horror story, Shrine, and follows the story of a young girl named Alice Pagett who suddenly acquires the ability to heal the sick.

She credits her miracles to a visit from the Virgin Mary, and as news of her powers advances, the word spreads around the town and people herd to see it for themselves - including one disgraced journalist who decides to investigate.

However, as abnormal occurrences begin to unfold, it gradually begins to become clear that these so-called powers are the work of something far more menacing.

The flick stars Cricket Brown as Alice Pagett, Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Gerald, William Sadler as Father Hagan, and Cary Elwes as Bishop Gyles. It is directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos and produced by Sam Raimi.

When The Unholy was first released, it received mixed reviews from audiences and critics. A quick look through Rotten Tomatoes will indicate that not everyone was a fan as the audience score is just 56% and the critic score is 28%.

But, now that it's available to stream on the streaming service many people are tuning into the horror and are now voicing their reactions.

Taking to Twitter, Richard Speight, Jr - who starred in Supernatural - wrote: "Nothing says 'I’m going to kill you in your sleep' like THIS box of chocolates. Thanks a LOT, @JDMorgan. I may never close my eyes again. (Watch the movie and join me in my fear-induced insomnia!)."

Another frightened viewer said: "Just got done watching The Unholy movie with my Mom. Good movie, as a horror fan and horror gamer, I can say there were parts the definitely scared the s*** out of me."

A third interjected: "I started watching the unholy on Netflix...5 minutes in and unless my boyfriend stays at mine for infinity, its gonna stay that way. I'm still getting over 'the ring'".

A fourth user shared: "Just done watching! Solid horror movie nothing stand out about it. But I can say there were parts that definitely scared the s*** out of me."

The Unholy follows a recent report of another Netflix movie, The Fall, leaving viewers feeling sick because it was filmed at the top of a 2,000-foot radio tower.

The Fall tells the story of thrill-seeking best friends Becky and Hunter (played by Grace Carolina Currey and Virginia Gardner), who love to push their limits and beat their fears.

After Becky's husband devastatingly dies in a freak climbing accident, she and Hunter travel out to the desert and dare to climb an incredibly tall abandoned radio tower to spread his ashes.

However many users on social media warned those afraid of heights to not watch the edge-of-your-seat survival thriller. Even the streaming giant was aware that the film might not sit right with them and tweeted: "Almost every single shot from Fall (2022) – a film about two women who get stranded after climbing to the top of a 2000ft radio tower - will make you feel a bit wobbly."

The Unholy and The Fall are both available to watch on Netflix.
