Chicago White Sox star Liam Hendriks has opened up about being diagnosed with cancer and will begin treatment imminently.

The sports star, 33, has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and has vowed to face it with "the same determination I have used when facing other obstacles in my life."

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a form of cancer that begins in the lymphatic system, which is part of the body's immune system.

In non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, white blood cells called lymphocytes grow abnormally and can form tumors throughout the body, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Sharing the news on Instagram, Hendriks told his followers: "As a professional athlete, I have always been mindful to try and use my position in the public eye to the most positive ends possible by shining a light on causes or issues that touch close to home for myself, my wife, and my family.

"It is in that spirit that I want to share some personal health news I have learned in the past few days, and do so on my own terms.

"Recently I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Hearing the word 'Cancer' came as a shock to my wife and I, as it does to millions of families each year.

"However, I am resolved to embrace the fight and overcome this new challenge with the same determination I have used when facing other obstacles in my life."

He added: "My treatment begins tomorrow, and I am confident that I will make a full recovery and be back on the mound as soon as possible.

"I know with the support of my wife, my family, my teammates and the Chicago White Sox organization, along with the treatment and care from my doctors, I will get through this."

According to Cancer.net, the five-year survival rate for Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is 73%.

Many of Hendriks' peers voiced their support in his comments, including Miguel Cabrera, who left praying hands emojis.

MLB's official Instagram account added: "The entire baseball community is behind you, Liam."

The three-time All-Star has been in the major leagues since 2011, with his breakout year coming in 2019 with the Oakland A's.

He is currently signed to the Chicago White Sox on a three-year contract worth $54million, which he signed in 2021.

The team added that they are "optimistic he will pitch again for the White Sox as soon as viable," adding on Twitter: "We're all with you, Liam! You've got this, 31."
