Will Smith has responded to Jada Pinkett Smith following the launch of her bombshell memoir in which she admitted that she had been separated from the star for almost a decade.
The 52-year-old shocked fans last week when she revealed in her new book, Worthy, that she and her husband had secretly split seven years ago.
Speaking of the book during an exclusive interview with PEOPLE Magazine, the actress stated that she and Will were "still figuring things out," before saying: "We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us."
She also mentioned that her children helped her build her confidence.
"My children, they’re little gurus. They’ve taught me a deep sense of self-acceptance," she told the outlet. "They love every part of me. The level of love, unconditional love that they have for me and their dad. And it's one thing to want to be the person that gives that unconditional love. And then there's, to be the recipient of that."
After the bombshell news, Jada elaborated on the couple's set-up during an interview with Hoda Kotb on TODAY.
"First of all, I’m really shocked, because mind you, I’m not there. We haven’t called each other husband and wife in a long time," she told the host.
When questioned about why they don't get divorced if they have been living separate lives, the answer is that they simply don't want to.
"We don’t want to because we love our family and we love each other," she said. "You know, it’s more of a life partnership. Now 10 years from now, Hoda? Who knows."
When speaking of their separation, she said: "Why it fractured... that - that’s a lot of things... By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.
"I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through... whatever. I just haven't been able to break that promise," she added.
While Jada opened up about her relationship with Will, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum was seemingly quiet. Until now.
During an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, the host read a letter penned by the star in response to the release of the tell-all book.
"I applaud and honor you. If I had read this book 30 years ago, I definitely would’ve hugged you more,” Shetty said, during a teaser clip from the episode, which is set to be released later today. "I’ll start now. Welcome to the Authors Club. I love you endlessly. Now go get some Merlot and take a rest."
Jada responded with a laugh, saying: "He know I can’t have no Merlot."
She then seemed to be emotionally moved by the note before noting: "That’s beautiful. That’s why I can’t divorce that joker."
