Adan Canto has died aged 42 after a battle with cancer.
The actor - best known for his roles in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Designated Survivor, and Netflix’s Narcos - passed away following a short and private battle with appendiceal cancer as per Variety.
Jennifer Allen, the actor's publicist, also confirmed the news to USA TODAY in an emailed statement on Tuesday.
"Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew," Allen added. "Those who glimpsed it were changed forever... He will be greatly missed by so many."
Born in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, Canto moved to the United States and spent most of his childhood in Del Rio, Texas, where he initially pursued a career in music.
After writing songs for several Mexican TV shows and films, he secured himself a role in theater before landing his very first TV role on Estado de Gracia in 2009.
His American debut later came in 2013 in the Fox crime thriller series The Following, starring Kevin Bacon. And from there Canto went to in ABC’s sitcom Mixology, Netflix’s crime drama Narcos, Blood and Oil and Second Chance. His first major film role was playing the superhero Sunspot in Fox X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014.
Then in 2016, Canto joined Fox’s Designated Survivor taking on the role of Vice President Aaron Shore alongside other stars such as Kiefer Sutherland and Italia Ricci.
His most recent project saw him starring in the drama series titled The Cleaning Lady with Elodie Yung.
In a joint statement after the news of the 42-year-old's death, Warner Bros. Television and Fox Entertainment said: "We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Adan Canto. A wonderful actor and dear friend, we were honored to have him as part of the Warner Bros. Television and Fox Entertainment families since his U.S. debut in The Following more than a decade ago."
"Most recently, he lit up the screen in The Cleaning Lady with a powerful performance that showcased his artistry, range, depth and vulnerability. This is an unfathomable loss, and we grieve alongside his wife Stephanie, their children and loved ones," they added before concluding: "We will miss Adan dearly."
Sutherland also shared a tribute to the star.
"It seems lately I have had to make too many posts like this one, but I am heartbroken by the loss of Adan Canto," he wrote in an Instagram post on Tuesday. "He was such a wonderful spirit. As an actor his desire to do well, to be great, and then do better, was truly impressive and he will be greatly missed.
"I am also heartbroken for his wife, Steph and his two young children. Adan, may you rest in peace," the actor added.
Canto is survived by his wife Stephanie Ann Canto, and two children, Roman Alder and Eve Josephine.
