Since the dawn of modernity, it seems as if women's sexuality has been misunderstood by men, and subsequently mandated by society writ large. Certainly, there is still a shocking amount of myth and misunderstanding that surrounds talk around the "elusive" female orgasm, and many people, women themselves included, have a very poor knowledge of the female anatomy.
Most importantly, however, is the fact that there still exists a culture of shame and secrecy around women's sex lives. While men are able to talk about their sexual proclivities and conquests rather openly, it is still frowned upon for women to express a desire in sex. And this is mostly due to a harmful double standard; while men are praised for sleeping with multiple partners, and branded as "players" and "legends" from their friends, women who engage in frequent sex, with different partners, are called "sluts".
This is the sentiment that an acclaimed sex expert expressed in a recent column. Dr
Mahinder Watsa is the resident "sexpert" of the Mumbai Mirror. He has dispensed helpful, albeit humorous sex advice for thousands of readers for years now, and his stories remain
widely popular among citizens in India. And this recent column proves exactly
why
he's so beloved.
In a recent column,
Watsa used his incredibly dry sense of humour to address one of India's biggest problems: the treatment of female sexuality. When confronted with a very confused young man's question about women and how they approach sex, his response was so perfect that it was shared on Twitter by the comedian Rohan Joshi, and it understandably went viral.
Dr
Watsa was asked:
"I am a 22-year-old man. I wish to know if women have more sexual urges as compared to men?"
To which he wryly responded:
"They may well have but we don't know as they have been shamed into not talking about their sexuality."

Yes, Dr Watsa's response is so spot on that it deserves all the raised hand emojis. And Twitter certainly thought so too. One social media user wrote "he is damn cool, right and witty with his answers..." while another added, "He is quite feisty for an 87 year old!"

And Dr Watsa certainly deserves all the praise. In a largely conservative community, having liberal, educated voices such as his, which strive to elevate women and destigmatize their sex lives, cannot be appreciated enough.
This is not the first time that the 90-year-old has had some choice words for befuddled young men. Back in 2015, a man wrote in with the following query, "I've heard a lizard's tail grows back when cut. I was curious if the same holds true for my penis". And it's safe to say Dr Watsa didn't hold back. He simply retorted, "your penis is not a tail". Hilarious, right?
While none of us can ever hope to have as much sass as Dr Watsa, we can only hope that there are more men like him out there in the world, who don't belittle female sexuality, and instead attempt to understand it.
