As you've probably noticed by now,
Christmas is just around the corner - and it's bringing a lot of weird traditions along with it. At no other time of year will you see people pretending to enjoy Brussels sprouts, or kissing one another under a bit of mistletoe, or leaving a plate of carrots by the fire for a flying reindeer to enjoy.
One of the weirdest traditions of all, however, is
Christmas trees. People spend a fortune on the things - either real ones full of bugs, or fake ones made to look like the real ones full of bugs - and make them a temporary fixture of their living space for a decent portion of the year. They're bulky, they take ages to set up and put away, and, if you have small children or pets, they're pretty much a recipe for having your house covered in bits of leaves and glitter for the following three months.
Although, with that being said, they are a lot of fun to decorate. In fact, for 21-year-old Alex Bermingham, helping her grandmother put up the Christmas tree was probably one of the funniest moments of the year.
The young woman from Cork, Ireland, had kindly volunteered to help her dear old granny hang some ornaments on the tree when she noticed something a little strange about one of the baubles. Instead of being one solid decoration, it appeared to have a split down the middle, as if it could be opened into two halves. So Alex decided to investigate.
Sure enough, she was able to open up one of the decorations to have a look inside, and what she found was, well, slightly not safe for work...

Yes, unbeknownst to her, Alex's 74-year-old nana had gone out and bought a load of kinky festive g-strings. Amazing.
This prompted other tales of accidentally-lewd hilarity. There was this naughty nana, who decided that the best time for her grandson to learn about lube was when he had chapped lips:
And this unsuspecting aunt, who received a rather special surprise when she pulled her cracker one year:
When Alex's grandmother realized what she'd done, however, she wasn't quite so prudish:

Speaking with the Metro, Alex said that her nan took the situation rather well. She also explained that the revelation was rather more entertaining for her than it was for her gran, who had only picked out the decorations because she liked the colour.
She said:
"[Alex's grandmother] hadn’t a clue what was in them at the time but was drawn to them as her favourite colour is lavender and just grabbed them at the counter but was none the wiser as to what was actually in them: glitter G-strings. She never realized until they were pointed out to her. My reaction consisted of pure shock and laughter at the situation!"
Honestly, they make a nice change to the usual battered old
Santa baubles or yellowing snowflakes that have been stuck in the attic for years - and it's certainly a story to tell the guests on Christmas day.
