Idris Elba appears to have given an answer as to whether he will be the next James Bond after months of speculation.
Getting to play James Bond is often a career-defining move and is an honor that only a handful of actors get to do.
Daniel Craig has been our Bond since the mid-noughties and it's tough to think of anybody else taking over the role, but the time is fast approaching when a decision must be made.
As similar with Doctor Who, fans of the franchise love to speculate about who will take over the iconic role as everyone gives their thoughts on who the next MI6 agent should be.
A number of names have been thrown into the hat, with Tom Hardy appearing to be someone that fans would love to see, alongside Henry Cavill and Idris Elba.
If Elba did take the role, he would be the first Black actor to play Bond, but he has recently given an answer to the speculation and has downplayed the rumors.
The actor spoke at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Tuesday (February 14) where he discussed his role in Luther, a dark cop-drama where the actor plays the tormented character of John Luther.
He then appeared to comment on the Bond rumors as he said, via the Independent: "You know, a lot of people talk about another character that begins with ‘J’ and ends with ‘B,’ but I’m not going to be that guy. I’m going to be John Luther. That’s who I am."
So unless J and B stand for something else, it would seem that Elba has distanced himself from the role which will probably be a disappointment to fans around the world.
Bond first hit the big screen in 1962 with Dr. No when Sean Connery gave us his iconic version of the British agent, and today he remains the actor that is usually impersonated when people do their impressions of Bond.
David Niven took over in 1967 but only played the character once in the spoof Casino Royale before Australian-born actor George Lazenby took over to give his portrayal in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Lazenby was intended to continue in the role, but he stepped down leaving fan favorite Roger Moore to take over in 1973 where he remained until 1985.
Next came Timothy Dalton who also had a fairly short-lived stint as the spy, featuring in only two films before the ever-suave Pierce Brosnan took over.
Brosnan's portrayal of Bond is arguably what people will most remember of his career, though his rendition of S.O.S in Mamma Mia should probably come first.
Daniel Craig took over in 2006 and gave viewers a classy yet gritty version of the character, before (spoilers) meeting his end in an explosive finale where he died saving the world... again.
Whoever takes over the role certainly has a tough act to follow, with Aaron-Taylor Johnson currently appearing to be the frontrunner.

Idris Elba has revealed that he was put off potentially playing James Bond due to the racist backlash at the prospect of a person of color playing 007.
Since it was announced that Daniel Craig's final appearance in the hit spy franchise would be in 2021's No Time To Die, several actors have been rumored to be taking on the titular role following his exit.
One of those names being speculated was initially the 50-year-old Luther actor, but he ruled himself out of the running earlier this year, stating: "You know, a lot of people talk about another character that begins with 'J' and ends with 'B', but I’m not going to be that guy," per Huffington Post.
If Elba did take over as the new 007, he would have made history as the first-ever Black actor in the role, however, in a recent interview he opened up about how the racist abuse made him not ever want to accept the part in the future.
Appearing on the SmartLess podcast, Elba spoke about the rumors, saying: "I was super complimented for a long time about this. We’re all actors and we understand that role is one of those coveted [roles]. Being asked to be James Bond [would be] like: 'OK, you’ve sort of reached the pinnacle.'"
The Wire star went on to say that due to the popularity of the role, it was something "the whole world has a vote in," before talking about how the backlash brought him down from the high of being potentially in the running for it.
"Essentially, it was a huge compliment that every corner of the world except for some corners, which we will not talk about, were really happy about the idea that I could be considered," he continued. "Those that weren’t happy about the idea made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting because it became about race. And it became about nonsense and I got the brunt of it."
This isn't the first time the actor has spoken about the criticism, as back in 2019, Elba revealed to Vanity Fair that he'd found the negative reaction to the idea of him playing Bond "disheartening".
"When you get people from a generational point of view going, 'It can’t be.' And it really turns out to be the color of my skin. And then if I get it and it didn’t work, or it did work, would it be because of the color of my skin? That’s a difficult position to put myself into when I don’t need to," he said.
As it stands, the new James Bond star is yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, the Beast actor's most recent role is headlining the Apple TV+ thriller series Hijack - which premiered on the streaming service on Wednesday (June 28).

It takes a certain calibre of leading man to play the part of James Bond. Seriously, not just anyone can step into the tuxedo of 007 and helm that kind of franchise (as George Lazenby proved). You need to be pretty manly for a start: James Bond is a bloke's bloke first and foremost, but there's more to it than just sheer testosterone. Bond requires a certain amount of effortless cool and charisma, the authority and seriousness to hold the audience's attention, as well as a sardonic dry wit and a certain sexual magnetism. Plus, he needs to look good in black tie. Finding someone with all those attributes is no mean feat.
The current Bond, English actor Daniel Craig, has been open about the fact that he's pretty damn tired of the role by now, and is getting a little too old to convincingly play the part of the world's most famous spy, and many people have been clamouring for a person of colour to give Bond a go. So who is effortlessly cool and charismatic, serious yet witty, and also sexy as hell? Well, most people name Idris Elba as their first choice, and he seems to be the current favourite for the job.
Indeed, rumours have been floating around for years that Elba is all set to be the next James Bond. The trouble is, Elba himself doesn't sound like he's interested in the part at all. In fact, if certain interviews are to be believed, then it sounds as though he honestly wishes that we would all stop asking about it all the time. However, while attending that Golden Globes last night, Elba took to social media to troll his fans, by taking a selfie while sat next to Daniel Craig. The Instagram story shows Craig staring at Elba while pretending to be angry, with the caption: "awkward."
This isn't the first time that Idris has trolled social media users over the Bond role either. Back in August of 2018, Elba left fans shaken and stirred by cryptically writing: "My name's Elba, Idris Elba." Twitter exploded; with many assuming that this was Elba's way of making a public announcement that he was going to take up Craig's mantle. However, he left them all disappointed by following up this intial announcement by adding: "Don't believe the HYPE."

In a recent interview with British newspaper The Independent regarding the role of Bond, Elba stated: "It's interesting that the James Bond thing continues to go. I think it's more about, we just want to have a black guy play James Bond rather than Idris Elba, the actor, play James Bond. That's the part that I'm like, 'Ugh, come on.’"
To be honest, I can see his point. Although it would be cool to cast Elba as Bond, it's not cool to cast him out of tokenism - especially if the man himself doesn't want the gig.

It looks like Idris Elba could be back in the running to play James Bond.
Ever since Daniel Craig hung up his license to kill, speculation over who will play the legendary super-spy next has been rife.
London-born star Elba was a long-time favorite for the role until reports emerged last year that he was being considered as a potential Bond baddie instead.
However, according to a report by The Sun, Elba is now back in talks to play 007 himself after producer's carried out market research that revealed he was still an incredibly popular choice.
"Idris has long been in talks to play a role in the next era of James Bond’s story and last year was being considered for a role as an antagonist," a source reportedly told the outlet.
"However, talks surrounding him playing the lead have started again as producers realised how popular he would be after carrying out secret market research," the source continued.
"He ranked highly among the diverse group of movie buffs invited to participate in it. They didn’t want to see him as a nemesis — they want him as the hero," the source concluded.
This is not the first time that Bond producers have mentioned that they'd like to see Elba step into Bond's tuxedo. In January, boss Barbara Broccoli said "he's a magnificent actor" and admitted, "he has been part of the conversation" to Deadline.
As for the Luther star, he's always been up for taking over Bond's license to kill. "James Bond is a hugely coveted, iconic, beloved character that takes audiences on this massive escapism journey," he told Vanity Fair in 2019, adding: "Of course, if someone said to me, 'Do you want to play James Bond?', I'd be like, 'Yeah!'"
That said, Elba is a busy man with a lot of projects already under his belt. He's just finished shooting the feature-length movie of his UK crime drama Luther and is set to help Apple's thriller series Hijack (which he will both produce and star in).
Other favorites who have been touted to take over from Craig since his fifth and final outing as Bond in 'No Time To Die' include Bridgerton star Rege-Jean Page, Henry Cavill, Aidan Turner, and Tom Hardy.

The 25th entry into the British spy franchise is set to start filming before the end of 2018, but there isn't much we know about it yet.
What we do know is that Daniel Craig will be back in the lead role for one last time, Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) will be directing this time around, and the film is set to be released in the US on November 9, 2019 (the UK gets it earlier on October 25).
After that, it looks like Craig will departing the series, leaving someone else to take on the mantle.

When it comes to casting fan-favourite characters like James Bond, the internet usually has some ideas about who should take on the role. And, when rumours start to circulate, we all jump on the bandwagon.
Two of the names that recur time and time again with regards to Bond is Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba, but there's definitely more excitement about the latter.

One can only imagine how fans would react to a black man being cast in the role of James Bond, considering how this kind of change often aggravates toxic fandoms.
Daniel Craig is often cited as one of the most popular actors to take on the role, but many hated the casting initially - all because he had blonde hair.

While it may have seemed just like a rumour, recently it has started to sound like Elba may actually be in the running to play Bond. The Independent reported that producer Barbara Broccoli is interested in casting Elba for the role, writing:
"Director Antoine Fuqua revealed the details of a conversation with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, in which she said "it is time" for a non-white actor to take on the iconic role. Fuqua discussed who might be next in the running with Broccoli, who's certain the progressive move "will happen eventually", with Idris Elba a reported frontrunner for the role."
As both a former kickboxer, amateur race-car driver, outstanding actor, box-office draw and all-around hunk, Elba seems like a great choice for the role. And while some have said that the 45-year-old is a little old to play 007 - that's the same age Roger Moore was when he first took over.
Now, fans are even more excited - as it may be the case that Elba himself has responded to the recent reports, albeit in a cryptic way. Whether this is a mischievous tease or a sly confirmation of his involvement, it's up to you to decide. With his own version of 007's catchphrase, he posted:

While this may have just been a little joke, it certainly drove his fanbase nuts:

While this is by no means an official confirmation, it could be a hint that Elba is in the running for the role. Not only would he nail the role, but it would be a historic moment too.
