Every day, we see the best and brightest of the human race being celebrated. Just this weekend, the Oscars showcased the talents of the most skilled and creative actors, writers, and directors; and throughout the year we'll go on to see people from a whole variety of fields being rewarded for everything from sporting achievements to scientific breakthroughs.

But what exactly is it that separates some people from the rest? How come some people seem destined for greatness while others live out perfectly average lives? Is there any way to influence a person's future success?

Well, sort of - because it seems that a lot of indicators for a bright future lie in a person's childhood, and here they are:

1. They enjoy school

Marion Spengler, the lead author of a study that tracked more than 346,000 high school students from 1960, found that kids who were more attentive during their education went on to influence their drive for success later on in life. "Our research found that specific behaviours in high school have long-lasting effects for one's later life," she said.

2. They excel in reading and writing

Even if a child does not go on to pursue a career in a particularly literary field, the communication skills they'll gain from reading and writing competently at a young age will serve them in pretty much any work environment later on. According to Spengler's research, those who had fewer problems reading and writing usually ended up with more prestigious jobs and higher incomes.

3. They take responsibility for themselves

A kid who is dedicated to their school-life, who does their homework on time, and who strives to do their best without being told to is obviously blessed with the sort of self-motivation that even a lot of adults can't claim to have.

4. They do their chores

"If kids aren't doing the dishes, it means someone else is doing that for them," said Julie Lythcott-Haims, the author of How to Raise an Adult. She goes on: "And so they're absolved of not only the work, but of learning that work has to be done and that each one of us must contribute for the of the whole." According to her, a child's willingness and ability to do chores is the biggest predictor of future success.

5. They are rebellious

While a naughty kid might be a parent's worst nightmare, it might also be a blessing in disguise. Children who defy their parents and express a strong sense of independence at a young age are more likely to pursue a higher education route.

6. They're good at math

A 2007 analysis of 35,000 children in the US, Canada and England discovered that attaining essential math skills at a young age was a good predictor of a child's mental capability and chance of success later in life.

7. They have perseverance

Pretty much every kid is going to face some sort of adversity in their childhood, but only the most successful ones will stick to their goals and refuse to let anything else get in their way.

So, if your child is ticking off most (or at least some) of these points, there's a good chance they're headed for a rewarding future.
