A 98-year-old Jewish grandma has become a social media sensation after joining TikTok in an effort to share her experiences during the Holocaust.
Lily Ebert is a Tiktok star with a difference. Unlike many other big names on the platform who amass their followers with the latest trends and dance moves, Ebert has gained a following thanks to her stories of how she survived the Holocaust more than 77 years ago.
The articulate and motivational grandma is happy to receive questions from her much younger fans, which she answers honestly and candidly in an effort to help educate a new generation about the atrocities of Auschwitz and the Holocaust.
The inspirational grandmother has been able to share her stories thanks to the help of her 18-year-old great-grandson, Dov Forman. Per ABC7, Dov records, edits, and posts each video himself to help spread his great-grandma's message and lessons.
Per ABC News, Ebert once found it difficult to talk about the horrors she witnessed and endured in an Auschwitz concentration camp, but her close bond with Dov has helped to share the trauma in a way that can help others.
In one video, a TikTok user asks Ebert if the Nazis really removed gold teeth from prisoners, to which she says: "In Auschwitz, they took away everything."
In another post, Lily is asked by a TikTok user what she missed most after being detained in Auschwitz, to which she replies: "My freedom. To move, to speak, to do what I want. To be human."
Lily and grandson Dov have now amassed over 1.7 million followers on the social media platform thanks to her honest and heartfelt videos.
Ebert was just 20 when she, her mother, and her five siblings were taken to Auschwitz in 1944 on one of the last trains to enter the camp.
After enduring months of hard labor, the family was transported to another camp - Altenburg - where Ebert's mother and some of her siblings were condemned to death in the gas chambers.
In a book published at the end of last year, Lily's Promise: How I Survived Auschwitz and Found the Strength to Live, Ebert described the harrowing reality of life in the concentration camps. In one of her TikTok videos, she revealed that two of her sisters survived and that she helped to look after them.
Lily and Dov's videos truly are incredible - and you'll definitely learn something from her educational posts. Be sure to give them a follow here.
