An Australian man has gone viral after sharing the lackluster discovery he made after finally opening a safe he had found five years ago.

Taking to Twitter, Christiaan Van Vuuren - who uses the handle @ChristiaanVanV on the social media platform - shared a photo story depicting what happened when his friend, Pat Stevenson, finally cracked open a safe he had found buried underground back in 2016.

The caption read: "A friend of mine found a locked safe buried underground 5 years ago. For 5 years there has been anticipation over what might be inside it. Today, he finally opened that safe..."

Now, usually when stories like this go viral, the person opening the safe often finds forgotten wads of cash or lost-long family heirlooms that are worth a fortune.

Sadly for Pat, he wasn't destined to be one of those people.

As the caption continues: "...Within it, was a single XXX condom... As in a branded condom, from the 2002 movie [starring] Vin Diesel!"

Yes, for those of you who don't remember (which is probably most of you), xXx was a spy-thriller that saw Diesel's character, an extreme sports athlete by the name of Xander Cage, being recruited by the government for a special mission.

The movie currently holds a generous 5.9/10 rating on IMDb.

Since posting the tweet on Wednesday (May 26), the post has amassed over 60,000 likes and more than 8,000 retweets. And, naturally, Twitter was as sympathetic as ever to Stevenson's find.

One person joked: "Someone told them to practice safe sex and they got confused."

Another sarcastically tweeted: "Your friend must be born under a lucky star. What a treasure."

A third Twitter user pondered: "You know someone was wanting to open that, and probably needed that condom. Y'all ever consider that? You took his only single XXX condom from the 2002 movie starring Vin Diesel. It might be expired, but that guy didn't care. He wanted the condom."

In an interview with Slate, Pat later revealed that he is now storing the condom in a safe plastic container because his brother is confident that it'll be "worth something one day".
