A man has ignited a debate online after he asked to split a bill on a date because she ordered an appetizer that he didn't want, nor eat.

Modern dating can be incredibly confusing because everybody seems to have different ideas of what the correct etiquette is which can lead to some awkward moments.

The main issue that tends to arise during a date is who has to pay at the end of it, and one man encountered a sticky scenario and recorded it for our viewing pleasure.

In a recent viral TikTok video posted under the username @thewaterboy, a man shared his experience of asking his Tinder date to split the check.

In the video, the man displayed the check with one credit card and captured the moment when his date reluctantly placed a second card into the folder.

After she questioned why she should pay half, he explained: "Because it's a first date, maybe we should split the bill."

The video later transitioned to the pair sitting in a car, where the woman expressed her discontent, saying: "I can't believe you made us split the bill."

The man defended his decision, mentioning that she ordered an appetizer he didn't touch. The woman countered, saying: "You asked me out."

Despite attempts to say goodbye, she simply responded with a curt "bye" and slammed the car door.

Sharing his frustration in the TikTok caption, the man exclaimed: "I don't even know her, and she wanted to split the bill??? After SHE ordered an appetizer that I didn't want!! THIS is what it's like dating in MIAMI smh. I gotta move somewhere else; these girls are ENTITLED."

While the video gained over four million views, the comment was full of people giving their opinions. Many disagreed with the man, arguing that if someone asks for a date, they should be the one to foot the bill.

"I’m with her. You asked for the date… you pay," one person said, while a second added: "If the man asks me to split on the first date, I’m not arguing, that just will be the last. Chivalry is dead at that point."

Others offered advice to the man, saying he should have communicated his plans beforehand. One comment read: "Coming from a dude, This is something that should have been communicated to her prior to going out. 'Hey, it is our first date. Would you agree...' etc."

A final comment read: "It’s not entitlement, it’s called being a gentleman. YOU asked her out. What makes you think that she knew you wanted to split it?"

It's safe to say that the comment section did not go the way he wanted...
