Marjorie Taylor Greene has been widely criticized on social media this week after posting an image showing her next to a "despicable" and transphobic sign.
According to CNN, the controversy has come in the wake of the US House of Representatives passing the historic equality reform bill.
Sharing the image to Twitter, the 46-year-old Georgia representative can be seen posing in front of a sign that many believe to be transphobic.
Additionally, CNN reports that the sign in question was put up across the hall from Illinois Representative Marie Newman, whose own daughter is transgender.
On Wednesday (February 24), Newman, pasted a blue-and-white transgender flag to her own office door.
Later sharing a video of it with her 44,000 followers on Twitter, Newman captioned the footage: "Our neighbor, @RepMTG, tried to block the Equality Act because she believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is “disgusting, immoral, and evil.
"Thought we’d put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door."
Not to be outdone, a few days later Greene affixed a sign of her own to her office door, directly across from Newman's. The incendiary sign in question read: "There are TWO genders: MALE & FEMALE. 'Trust the Science!' [sic]"
Greene shared her own video of her sign on Twitter and included a caption mirroring Newman's, reading:
"Our neighbor, @RepMarieNewman, wants to pass the so-called 'Equality' Act to destroy women's rights and religious freedoms. Thought we'd put up ours so she can look at it every time she opens her door [sic]"
In the wake of this provocative statement, a number of social media users promptly criticized Greene's perceived transphobia.
For instance, actress Patricia Arquette wrote in reply simply: "God made trans people," before adding: "I’m shadow banning everyone who liked your tweet."
Meanwhile, podcast host Brian Tyler Cohen wrote: "Maybe the person saying that wildfires are caused by Jewish space lasers should not be lecturing us on trusting science."
Actress Debra Messing wrote to Greene: "You are despicable, loathsome, and ignorant. You suggesting that an EQUALITY Act will hurt women’s rights and has anything to do with religious rights is willful gaslighting.
"You are a hateful bigot, THAT is why you are against Equality. #TransRightsAreHumanRights [sic]"
Posé star Angelica Love Ross wrote: "Some of you enjoy being awful human beings. So please spare us the tears when Karma comes for you."
Scientist, former NASA engineer, and Emily's Wonder Lab host Emily Calandrelli also chimed in: "Nope. Science is not with you on this.
"The data shows that gender is fluid and can exist on a spectrum. If you want to be hateful towards another human, please don't blame science."
RuPaul's Drag Race contestant Shea Couleé urged the public to report Green on Twitter for hate speech, writing in a tweet: "Instead of retweeting this human garbage fire, and talking about how disgraceful she is, it’s better to just report her and deplatform her."
The Equality Act, passed on Friday, February 25, guarantees the civil rights of members of the LGBTQ+ community in a number of social areas; including, but not limited to, employment, housing, education, public accommodations, credit ratings, and jury service.
NBC reports that the bill was narrowly passed at a vote of 224 to 206 against, with a mere three Republican reps pledging their support for it.
Commenting on the act in a statement made on Twitter, President Joe Biden wrote: "Transgender rights are human rights — and the House made that clear today by passing the Equality Act.
"Now it's time for the Senate to do the same."
