Disney star Mae Whitman says she's 'proud and happy' to be pansexual

Mae Whitman has opened up about her sexuality in a new tweet.

As reported by People magazine, the 33-year-old Scott Pilgrim Vs The World star spoke about her pansexuality in a post addressed to her 310,000 followers on Twitter in a post made on Monday, August 16.

In it, the actress spoke about the importance of representation for LGBTQ+ people, and the Disney animated series The Owl House, in which she voices the character of Amity Blight.

Whitman wrote: "Just taking a moment to say I am SO proud to be even a small part of a show like The Owl House."

She continued: "Being pansexual myself, I wish I had such incredible characters like Amity and Luz in my life when I was growing up. Queer representation is sososo important :,) keep it up world! [sic]"

In a follow-up post, Whitman clarified the meaning of the term, providing a link to GLAAD's Accelerating Bi+ Acceptance page, and writing: "I know ppl might be unfamiliar with what pansexual means.

"For me it means I know I can fall in love with people of all genders. This is the word that fits me best and I’m proud+happy to be part of the Bi+ community [sic]"

The Owl House has been praised by critics and fans alike for its positive representation of LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent characters in lead roles.

Whitman previously spoke on the subject of her sexuality in a 2014 interview with Glamour, stating: "I just like people. I like everyone. I see so much wonderful potential in everyone that I meet, and there's always something to learn from.

"I think girls are attractive, I think boys are attractive, I think old people are attractive, I think young people are. I appreciate everything and everyone."

She added: "I am really learning to be completely present and in the moment. I feel like I've dated a lot in my life since I was young — all different kinds of people — and I feel like I've learned so much from every single person that I've dated."
