A man has left social media users gobsmacked after sharing a photo taken with a stranger that looks identical to him.

In a post that has now gone viral on Reddit, Sean wrote: "I wasn’t convinced until now… we are definitely in a simulation. Today I randomly swam past my doppelgänger at the Flamingo pool in Vegas."

Along with the caption, the holidaymaker shared a snap of him and another man, and the resemblance between them is - and I don't say this lightly - uncanny.

The doppelgänger was a splitting image of Sean - even down to the smile, cap, and the specific type of glasses they were both wearing.

Sean explained under the comments that he was swimming in the pool when he noticed a group of strangers "pointing" and "laughing" at him which made him feel self-conscious.

He started to feel pretty insecure about that until he saw that his friends were doing the same thing to somebody else. That person turned out to be Sean's lookalike.

The man was floored when he spotted his double, writing: "I immediately thought, 'Holy s**t, that guy looks like the dude I see in the mirror,' and my second thought was, 'He looks cooler than me. Probably has real Club Master Ray-Bans, unlike my Zenni knock-offs.'"

The comments on the post - which has earned 95.5K upvotes so far - are full of people jesting about how strong the similarities between the two are.

In the most upvoted comment on the post, one person joked: "There are three of you guys at every brewery."

Another user said: "You're better looking than the other guy," while a third user noted that they both look like the actor Seth Rogan: "You look like brothers of Seth Rogen."

A fourth mentioned the similarities in their swimwear, writing: "Pretty crazy coincidence they both not only wear glasses but chose the same frame and color. And on top of that, that day they both chose to wear a WHITE hat."

According to Dr. Teghan Lucas at the University of Adelaide, finding an exact doppelgänger is extremely unlikely. In fact, it is estimated that there's just a one in 135 chance of a single pair of doppelgangers existing on earth.

However, this statistic is based on two people who look exactly alike scientifically. In addition to this, facial recognition software site Twin Strangers claim that finding someone most people would classify as a "doppelgänger" is easier.
