A woman has revealed that her nine-year relationship is strained after she farted in front of her husband.

Sam, who changed her name for privacy reasons, took to the forum Kidspot to share that while she and her husband of six years are "open" with each other "99 percent" of the time, they have contrasting opinions on farting.

"From very early on in our relationship he made his views on this specific bodily function very clear after a night out at the pub with some friends," she told the Australian parenting website.

On one occasion, the man had seen one of his wife's female friends burp and went on a tangent after the outing, complaining about how "gross and uncouth" her friend was.

Since then Sam made a mental note to "maintain this flatulence quality control" and didn't let a single one rip in front of her difficult husband.

However, one night when she was trying to fall asleep, her usual self-control broke and she ended up farting in front of her spouse.

"I was lying in bed next to my wide-awake husband who had now turned to look at me with the most disgusted expression on his face that I had ever seen," she explained, adding that he said: "Sam, that is absolutely revolting!"

After the "embarrassing" ordeal, the wife felt insulted and had the "worst night's sleep [she'd] ever had," and apologized the next morning.

While her partner accepted her apology, Sam claimed that he continues to remind her of the incident as if he is warning her so she "never does it again".

"He will use any reminder of what happened to really drum home that burping or farting is not acceptable for a woman to do," she said.

"For example, if we watch a television show or a film and a woman burps or farts, he reminds me how disgusting it is by making a disgruntled noise or even talking about how uncivilized it is afterwards," Sam added.

Out of desperation, she turned to a friend for advice. However, once she had confessed to them, they were "outraged" that this is how her husband of many years behaves.

"Instead of suggesting anything helpful she was just outraged that this was how my husband was behaving, telling me that farting and burping is a natural bodily function and that it isn’t offensive or disgusting, and that I shouldn’t feel guilty about it," she wrote.

Shannon Chavez, a psychologist and sex therapist, echoed the wife's friend's words and stated that passing gas in front of your partner is a sign of openness in a relationship.

"This can also open up the dialogue to other important bodily functions that are often shamed and cause embarrassment including excretion of fluids during sex, menstruation, post-coital vaginal flatulence, and bowel movements," she told HuffPost.

"It is all human and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. A couple tackling this topic is setting a healthy foundation for open and honest communication," Shannon added.
