A man has gone viral on social media after posting a grocery store hack aimed at saving money.

A couple named Mason and Mai on TikTok - who go by the handle @savingforboba - shared a video with the overlay text: "How my frugal boyfriend saves money on his bananas."

The clip shows girlfriend Mai filming her boyfriend picking a banana out of the produce section before peeling off the skin and placing the fruit in a plastic bag.

Mason and Mai then stroll to the self-serve checkouts where the man places the now-lighter banana on the scales and it amounts to 51 cents.

As of this writing, the clip amassed over 800K views with many users sharing their thoughts on the hack. Some people criticised Mason and encouraged Mai to break up with him.

One user wrote: "Break up w him," while another commented: "Major red flag, get out of that relationship asap!!"

A third person commented: "Tell him to just weigh it without the bag too at this point," and a fourth users quipped: "He should be on that TV show 'Cheap Skates.'"

Meanwhile, others pointed out that high grocery prices in Australia require people to be frugal as it's more expensive than other places.

"This is probably in Australia where bananas are actually quite expensive compared to North America,'" one user shared, while a second user added: "He's so smart for that."

According to Daily Mail, a study from the New Mexico State University revealed that a banana peel roughly accounts to 12.5 per cent of the total weight of the fruit. This means that at a price of 80 cents per banana, removing the peel saves 10 cents.

This video bears a resemblance to a trend in Australia from last year where shoppers broke the stems off broccoli before buying it in order to save money. Because customers had to pay for the vegetable based on its weight, breaking off the stem means that they will pay less at the till.

Due to this, a supermarket had to issue a warning to people via a sign at the store that read: "ATT customers. You must not break the stems of the broccoli. This is classed as theft. All broccoli purchases will be checked at the registers. Thanks, Management."

The trend of removing stems before buying was even addressed in a viral TikTok by a user named Jenn Shaw - who goes by the handle @jenn_shaw_ on the social media platform.

She wrote that since broccolis are a shocking $11.90 now, you shouldn't waste the leftover discarded stems but instead, cut them into small chunks for a salad or stir fry.
