Italians are renowned the world over for their cuisine, and it's no wonder - they are the people who brought us many a delight including pizza, focaccia, lasagna, and, of course, bolognese.
However, the internet being the internet, some unusual interpretations of these dishes have made their way into the public domain, and now one man's recent interpretation of spaghetti bolognese has left the internet disgusted.
Reporter John Sweeney recently took to Twitter to share his version of the classic Italian dish.
He posted a picture of his unusual-looking bolognese in a frying pan that was captioned: "Spag Bol, properly done. No carrot. Lots of Italian red. Thank you."

The post did not go unnoticed on the social media website and it has received over 1.3K quote retweets and 1.7K likes a the time of writing.
While the odd social media user did approve of the bolognese, the majority of people couldn't help but slam the dish, with one branding it a "cry for help".

A second wrote: "I'm ringing the police. A crime is being committed."

A third added: "I can see an international diplomatic incident right there."

Sweeney's onion, in particular, attracted a lot of bemused comments from Twitter users.
One questioned: "John what is that onion about [sic]."

Sweeney's decision to add carrots was also a questionable one, with author Elizabeth Haynes remarking: "I don't understand how anyone thinks carrots go in a spag bol. It's just madness."

However, while many people on Twitter slammed Sweeney's bolognese, some did offer constructive criticism.

One wrote: "Shouldn't have mushrooms, white not red onion, and it should have carrot and celery. Got the rosemary and red wine part right though mate."

An Italian chef wrote: "John, I'm a chef. I'm Italian. This is very very wrong."

Alongside a picture of his own bolognese, the chef explained: "Carrots, celery, and onions DO go in Bolognese. Along with Chianti, bay leaf, thyme, parsley, tomato paste (it’s not a red sauce), garlic & seasoning. This is what bolognese should look like."

He added: "Those are [homemade] gluten free ravioli. Bolognese goes with tagliatelle, ravioli, and larger ribbon pasta. Not spaghetti. Spaghetti is for carbonara, aglio e olio, and cacao de Pepe. Penne is for red sauce, and fettuccine Alfredo isn't a real thing. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk."

So, the next time you're thinking about making bolognese, you might want to bear this Italian chef's words of wisdom in mind. Or you can do what Sweeney did... whatever floats your boat (or, in this case, tastebuds).
