Michael Caine has opened up about his secrets to living a long life, and let's just say, he's got some bold advice to give those who want to follow in his footsteps.

In a new interview with the Daily Mail, the veteran actor, best known for his roles in blockbuster movies like The Dark Knight and Now You See Me, talked about his career, his upcoming projects, and his personal life - the latter of which got a lot of people talking.

While initially the 90-year-old and his latest co-star and long-time friend, John Standing, discussed the ins and outs of working on their upcoming movie The Great Escaper together, things took a turn when the interviewer asked what the secrets to staying alive are.

"A massive telly," replies Standing. "We both love watching endless sport."

"Oh, yes. Younger wives, no snacking, and wear trainers at all times," adds Caine. "And you have to be careful not to fall down."

Pretty solid advice there.

Elsewhere, the pair also stated that it helps to be surrounded by young people, like their grandchildren.

The conversation was ignited by Caine, who was candid about how times have changed over the past few years, especially in regard to what's considered "politically correct" now.

After referring to "not being able to speak your mind" as "dull", both Caine and Standing agreed that it's for the best that they learn about the new social climate.

"I try [to learn] but it's hard," says Caine, "I like to learn from friends who are younger than me."

"I love being around young people," says Standing. "The secret to old age is to mix with people much younger than yourself. Which is why I love spending time with my nine-year-old grandson, who makes me watch him play Minecraft for hours – and gets furious when I call it Witchcraft by mistake."

"Yes," agrees the 90-year-old actor. "Because as you get older, you inevitably think about dying, but as soon as you get grandchildren, your focus shifts. You think about them. You want to go on living because they are so much a part of you, and you want to live for ever to see what they do with their lives. You just want to keep going."

"My four grandchildren are everything," adds Standing.

Caine is set to play Bernard Jordan in The Great Escaper, which is set to be released early next month.

Based on a true story, the film tells the story of a Second World War veteran, born in 1924, leaving his care home in Hove aged 89 without telling his wife or carers where he was going. Later, it's discovered that the war hero was only trying to pay his respects at the 70th D-Day commemorations in Normandy, so that's exactly where he was going.

On his journey, he also meets another Second World War veteran, Arthur, and the two form a beautiful friendship that continues to flourish throughout the entire story.

When Jordan is eventually tracked down, he was shocked to see that he'd become a media hit and had even been branded a hero thanks to his grit and determination.

The Great Escaper is set to be released October 6.
