Around the world, health services are being put to the test as they struggle to combat the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
On Monday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a strict set of lockdown rules for the nation, in an effort to get people to stay home and "protect the NHS" (National Health Service).
Watch Boris Johnson's address to the nation below:Current John Hopkins University numbers state that the UK has 14,754 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with a death toll of 761. As hospitals in the UK battle the overwhelming numbers of admissions, one paramedic by the name of Laura Heath took to social media to express how proud she was to be working on the frontline to combat the virus.
Taking to Twitter to share the selfie, the 24-year-old wrote alongside the snap: "Proud to be a paramedic".
However, despite the fact there were many Twitter users quick to share their appreciation for Laura's remarkable work, there were also some disgusting comments from trolls shaming the paramedic for sharing a selfie and wearing makeup during her shift.
However, Laura was quick to shut down the negative comments, responding to a now-deleted tweet, saying:
"Whilst I appreciate your opinion, this tweet was to show people that Young females can be paramedics to and during this epidemic I’m proud to wear my uniform so want to show the world! If I wanted likes or attention I’d post this on my instagram, not twitter. [sic]"
Fortunately, many more people have tweeted their support to Laura, and rightfully thanked her for her work:
Following the whole of the UK showing their appreciation to the NHS by clapping from their windows on Thursday evening, Heath wrote on Twitter: "What an absolute honour to be part of the nhs, the world is a much better place when everyone supports one another, we will get through this."
Thank you for your work, Laura. And to everybody else in the UK: Stay home. Protect the NHS. And save lives.
