A shopper buying a packet of cigarettes has taken to social media to reveal that they scalded a stranger after they told them that they shouldn't smoke.

People online have been left divided after the unidentified stranger took to Reddit under the username 'cigsforgrandpa' to share their story in the 'Am I the A**hole' subreddit - a section of the site where users share a recent grievance and the online community decides whether or not they were in the wrong.

The unnamed user starts their story by writing: "This happened this morning.

"I was at the grocery store buying some food and then while the cashier was done scanning my s**t, I asked her to get me a carton of Camels. I don’t smoke, they were for my grandpa.

However, the Redditor then reveals that as the cashier was fetching the cigarettes, the man behind them - a "middle-aged dude" - said: "You're so young, you shouldn't be smoking."

The Redditor continues: "I don't think this was an appropriate comment even if I did smoke because it's none of his f***ing business. I said 'they're not for me, they’re for my grandpa.'"

After the cashier finished scanning the Redditor's items, the stranger once again interrupted, telling them that their grandpa shouldn't smoke either.

The Redditor explains: "Listen, my grandpa is 92 years old, smoking makes him happy and if he wants to smoke, I'm more than happy to help.

"But none of THAT was this guy's business so instead of saying something clever or snappy, I said 'sorry but I don’t think that's any of your f**king business.'"

After receiving a "look" from the cashier, the stranger allegedly replied: "Sorry. Jesus."

When the shopper recalled the story to their father, he said that "the dude was not being an a**hole but just trying to be friendly" - but the Redditor disagrees, stating that the stranger was "being invasive and gross".

After sharing their story with the Reddit community, people were left divided over who was in the wrong.

One person commented: "YTA [yes the a**hole] simply for dialing it up to 11 so fast.

"There's a way to tell someone to leave you alone without resorting to 'any of your f***ing business' type immaturity."

Other users believed both sides were in the wrong. One user typed: "ESH [everyone sucks here]. It wasn't his business, but you were overly hostile."

Another agreed, writing: "ESH. He was rude for saying what he said and you were rude for being snappy and swearing at him.

"Just wish people were generally nicer to each other. Someone says something like that to me, yeah they're being a but rude, but if they're not being aggressive or horrible, I just assume they're trying to come from a good place and I treat them that way, because what's the harm?"

However, many people sided with the poster, with one person writing: "I smoke and people tell me ALL THE TIME that it's bad for me.

"I usually respond with an over-exaggerated, 'really?!?! No one ever told me! Wow, this changes everything!"

Another said: "NTA. It's none of his business and he shouldn't be saying anything unless it's actively affecting him."
