A college professor has been slammed online after a video of him shouting at a hearing-impaired student went viral.
In a middle of a class taught via Zoom, the Ventura College professor attacks the young woman for "not paying attention" - despite being informed that she is hard of hearing.
"Miss Salazar, I've been talking to you, Miss Salazar," the professor says to the student.
"Why didn't you answer all the times I spoke to you," he demands to know, to which Miss Salazar responds, "I didn't hear it".
Talking over her, the professor goes on to suggest that the two of them should set up a Zoom call so that they can have some "real communication".
As his rant comes to a close, a female student named Abigail jumps in to inform the professor that Miss Salazar is hearing-impaired, which is why she couldn't respond right away.
Abigail also explains that Miss Salazar has a translator and a hearing piece. But despite the valid explanation given by the student, the professor stubbornly insists, "She's not paying attention. She's not trying."
He then goes on to ask Abigail whether she herself is Miss Salazar's translator.
"It's slower on her end because she needs to get it translated and then it goes to her hearing piece," Abigail explains.
Again, completely dismissing the very reasonable explanation given by his student, the professor continues: "Miss Salazar, have your counselor speak to me because you've got too much distraction to even understand what's going on."
Naturally, Miss Salazar defends herself against the accusations that she is not paying attention, to which the professor suggests that she should just have her translators teach her the whole class.
He then attacks her for "laughing and smiling" during his class and demands several times that she should have her counselor speak to him.
What the professor didn't know, however, was that another student had been secretly filming the entire interaction and later posted it online.
It was eventually shared on the r/IAmATotalPieceOfSh*t forum on Reddit, where the commenters were in disbelief at the disrespect shown by the professor to his students.
One person said: "It amazes me how often people double down when wrong simply because of pride/ego."
Another took to Twitter to say: "Figure out who he is and get him fired. We don't need teachers who are cruel to kids with disabilities."
Others shared their gratitude to Abigail for stepping in to clarify the situation, with one writing: "I am so thankful that Abigail spoke up for her. We need more Abigails in the world."
Another person said: "There needs to be more Abigail."
