Adult film director answers very common question about camera men who film p*rn stars
A cameraman who films adult movies has finally answered the one question everyone wants to know... yes, that one.
Adult content is a billion dollar industry, and behind every professional steamy clip that hits the internet is usually a cameraperson making sure each shot and angle is captured perfectly.
The finished product is designed to be arousing so one might imagine that it's the same on set, while the action is taking place.
Not so, according to porn director Dick Bush, who revealed that behind the scenes is about as unsexy as it can get.
Speaking on the Happy Hour podcast, he revealed: "You're a little bit removed from the situation because you've got a screen in front of you and I'm just looking at this, checking the framing, and I distinctly remember looking up from the screen and realizing 'Oh, there are two people just going at it like six feet in front of me. This is the weirdest thing.'
"And then you go back to the screen and suddenly you're removed from it."
When asked whether it feels "way less sexual than you'd expect" on set, Dick admitted: "Yes, because it's a bit stop-start, and especially when I'm directing, you'll say 'Wait, do that again, do this,' and that's not very sexy.
"If you guys were having sex in your own personal lives and I were to just come into the room and go 'sorry, just do that one more time. Move your leg. No, I can't see. That's it, really open up. No, no - make it uncomfortable, uncomfortably open up,' it's not gonna be very sexy."
The one question that everyone wanted to know is - how do porn directors get through their shifts without getting aroused?
Well, there's a simple and pretty gross answer according to Dick: "The smell."
When asked to elaborate, he explained: "Sometimes you walk into the room where we're shooting, maybe they've done the pictures beforehand, the sex pictures, and you walk in ready to film and you're like 'oh wow, smells like sex in here.' There are smells with sex sometimes."
Well, there you have it - the experience behind the scenes couldn't be more different than the final product consumers get to see.
Thankfully, all those cuts and redos, as well as some clever editing, means the video that makes it to whichever chosen streaming platform it ends up on provides the fantasy without the sobering dose of reality the director gets to see.
So next time you happen to load up an adult video (no judgment here), spare a thought for the poor old director behind the camera inside that musty room - they're probably not having as much fun as you'd think.
