A Spanish actress and television presenter, who made headlines for admitting that she kept her dead son's sperm to have a child, has given fans an update.
Ana Obregon, a socialite, caused controversy after having her deceased son's child when she was in her late 60s, sharing what it's like to be a "grandmother-mother."
She used the frozen sperm from her dead son, Alejandro Lecquio García, and a surrogate to bring her granddaughter Anita Sandra into the world back in 2023, two years on from her son's death due to cancer.
Obregon left the Spanish public in shock after she was seen leaving a US hospital at the time with a newborn, with surrogacy being illegal in her native land.
The now-retired actress confirmed that the baby had been conceived via an egg donor.
The absurdity of the situation stretches beyond that, as the child is also a royal, with the father of her deceased son being the former Spanish King Juan Carlos, the nephew of Alessandro Lecquio.
Speaking to ¡Hola! Magazine in 2023, she explained: "The girl isn't my daughter, she's my granddaughter. It was Aless' last wish to bring a child into the world."
Since then, Obregon has stayed away from the public eye and focused on raising her granddaughter, Ana Sandra Lequio Obregón, nickname Anita.
But now, she has given her social media followers a rare update on things, as she continues to raise the child, aged 71.
Speaking to her 1.3 million Instagram followers, the grandmother spoke about her experiences so far to mark Spanish Mother's Day.
Obregon shared a couple of snaps of her and her daughter-granddaughter Anita, along with an emotional message about the holiday.
She wrote in the caption of a post featuring some snaps of Anita: "Mother's Day hurts. My heart goes out to all the mothers who have their angels in heaven. Those who swallow their tears with a smile to survive.
"I need to tell you that love is the greatest force that exists, that we should try to feel their love from wherever they are. I need to tell you that we will be their mothers forever."
The former actress added: "Happy Mother's Day to the mothers who are lucky enough to have their children on earth, who can hug them, talk to them, smell them.
"Don't let a single day go by without telling them how much you love them."
She urged moms to "collect countless moments" with their children, claiming that for her, "the greatest pride and privilege is being a mother."
Speaking specifically about Anita, she went on: "Now I am a grandmother-mother to an angel who illuminates every second of my darkness. Blessed are all the mothers on earth and those who gave us life and are in heaven."
In a separate post, she penned an emotional message to celebrate Anita's third birthday in March, mentioning her late son.
"Today marks three years since I was reborn when I hugged you for the first time," she said.
"Because in doing so, I also hugged a little piece of your dad."
Obregon further wrote: "You have filled my dark world and my personal hell with light, smiles, mischief, hugs, diapers, pacifiers and toys all over the house.
"You are good, smart, sensitive and you have the same sense of humour as your father."
After admitting that she would 'someday' tell Anita all about 'why she is here', she added: "I will tell you about your dad's courage and the life lesson he taught us all.
"I will tell you how much he dreamed of hugging you, taking care of you and loving you, even though now he does it from heaven.
"I pray to God that you have good health and are happy for many more years. Always together, the three of us."
