A best man was asked to leave a wedding after a risky joke in his speech landed him in hot water.

Delivering a speech as the groom's best man is no easy feat. You're expected to pay tribute to the couple's romance, shower the bride with compliments, and share harmless anecdotes about the groom -  all while making the guests laugh hysterically.

But there's a very fine line between straight-talking humor and causing unforgivable offense.

Just ask one particular best man who thought he'd executed his speech perfectly, only to be asked to leave moments after.

Taking to Reddit over the weekend, the best man in question recounted the painful gaffe.

He began: "Today I did a speech as I am best man at my friend's wedding. It was going so well and people were laughing at all the right times and getting all the jokes."

The best man continued: "To my credit, I had practiced it work for word and it sounded sincere the whole way through.

"The 2 areas I did struggle in were the length and saying something about the bridesmaids as I didn't know any of them and it was too hard to say something that sounded honest."

After discussing his speech with a few pals some days before the wedding, he decided it was best to improvise on the day so that it would sound a lot more authentic.

When it actually came down to the speech, the best man did well at first. However, he became a little too confident when he made what he thought was a harmless quip about the bridesmaids.

He said: "Bridesmaids, I am a bit short of time here and I don't really know you all so I'd just like to say that 5 out of 6 of you look stunning today... figure it out amongst yourselves".

Needless to say, it didn't go down well.

The best man recalled: "The room went dead and I knew id really f***ed up. One of them started crying and I didn't actually mean any of them it was literally just nonsense.

"When I went to apologize, without sounding mean, I realized that she isn't actually that good-looking and was significantly less beautiful than the other bridesmaids."

Apparently, the offense caused was so great that he was made to leave right then and there.

He shared: "The bride came up to me and just said, 'I think it's best you leave' and the groom just nodding behind her."
