A man has divided opinion on social media after asking a woman for a $35 refund after she turned him down after their third date together.
According to The Daily Mirror, the incident in question was shared on Twitter earlier last week by a user named Alex Colbroth.
Alex, who hails from Milwaukee in Wisconsin, was taken aback when she declined to meet up again with a man she'd matched with on a dating app, and was subsequently presented with a bill for the last three dates they'd been on
Taking to Twitter on Thursday (February 25), Alex shared a screengrab of the text message she'd received from the unidentified man, and captioned the post simply: "It's the audacity for me."
Per The Mirror, the unnamed man wrote:
"Hi Alex, hope you're doing well. Would you mind letting me know what your Venmo is?
"The reason I ask is since you and I won't be seeing each other anymore, it's only fair to ask for equal payment from you for the dates we went on. [sic]"
He continued:
"I believe it was 3 separate times we went out bars/restaurants where I paid for us both each time.
"I'd say $35 is more than fair for your food and drinks that I got during those dates. I view that as a fair girl, I hope you'll consider reimbursing me. Thanks! [sic]"
Needless to say, Alex's tweet quickly picked up a lot of traction online. Her post has now accrued over 11,000 retweets and over 184,000 reactions as of the time of writing, and a number of other Twitter users have shared their thoughts on the man's request, with many bemoaning or mocking his behavior.
For instance, one person wrote "This man's dignity was worth $35 in his own eyes. Amazing."
Another person shared: "My ex did this too after 2 years. She asked for 5k back and when I didn’t pay that...I ended up paying more in an emotional damages suit. People really are the worst. [sic]"
Meanwhile, someone else wrote: "I had a guy ask me to pay him back for a $5 movie when I said I didn't think it was going to work."
However, some other people were more sympathetic to the man's plight, theorizing that he might be in dire financial circumstances.
For instance, one person wrote: "I can’t see myself being this petty but what is the issue, he’s clearly broke and isn’t getting any value from you lol [sic]"
Meanwhile, another Twitter user commented: "honestly more amazed with all the ppl shaming poor ppl in the replies. [sic]"
For her part, Alex made her reaction to the request for reimbursement all too clear in a later follow-up post, sharing an animated gif of the character of Boo from the 2001 Pixar movie Monsters Inc snuggling up in bed.
Alex jokingly captioned the post: "How I’m going to sleep tonight knowing I still have that $35 [sic]"
