A farmer has prepared an unforgettable surprise for his beloved wife on their momentous 50th wedding anniversary.
Lee Wilson, from Kansas, US, decided to plant 1.2 million sunflowers on 80 acres of land for his wife, Renee, to celebrate their five decades of marriage.
Speaking to ABC KAKE, the doting husband revealed that with the help of his son, he meticulously and secretly sowed the seeds of the sunflowers during the month of May.
"Well we're celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary on August 10th and you know what's a guy get his gal for the 50th? And I put a lot of thought into it and she always liked sunflowers," he said. "And I thought this is the year to plant sunflowers so I planted her 80 acres of sunflowers."
When the day of their anniversary arrived, Lee showed his wife the heartwarming present, and this left Renee overwhelmed with joy.
"It made me feel very special. It couldn't have been a more perfect anniversary gift than a field of sunflowers," she said in the interview.
The couple met in high school when they were 16 and had their first date at a FFA roller skating party in Harper Kansas. They have been together ever since.
"She couldn’t date until she was 16, and I called her on her 16th birthday and that’s when we started dating," Lee said, adding that he knew she was the one for him.
The sunflower field now looks like a vibrant carpet of yellow on the south side of Highway 54, four miles outside of where the Wilsons live. The stunning display of love has also attracted visitors who want to catch a glimpse of them in full bloom.
A video of the romantic gesture has been shared on X - formerly known as Twitter - and has drawn comments from users on the social media platform. One person wrote: "What a guy! Must really love his wife!!" while another penned: "Real love."
A third commented: "This is love. I would literally be in tears," and a fourth added: "Ladies, get you a man who will plant 1.2 MILLION (80 acres) of your favorite flower because you loved him in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, til death do you part!"
Kansas is often described as the "Sunflower State" due to the mass of wild sunflowers that extend across its landscape.
The sunflower season generally commences during the late summer months, usually from late July to early September, although the exact timing can differ, depending on weather conditions and planting schedules.
Anyone that wants to visit Lee's sunflower field will have to be fast as sunflowers are known for their short blooming period, normally lasting from two to three weeks.
