Mom faces backlash for 'ruining' daughter's baby's gender reveal by 'making it all about her'
A mother is facing backlash after many deemed that she made her daughter's gender reveal about herself.
Gender reveals are something that divides people at the best of times, particularly those reveals that really lean into the theatrics.
But ultimately, the only two people who matter in that scenario are the parents... which is why this latest video has rubbed people up the wrong way.
The viral gender reveal
New parents Gianna Wulf, 23, and her husband, 46, gathered in their backyard among friends to celebrate their baby’s gender reveal. Each held a confetti cannon, ready for the big moment as phones rolled.
But just before the reveal, Gianna’s mother quietly made her move — stepping onto a raised platform so she stood above everyone.
When Gianna asked what she was doing, her mother waved off the question and told them to carry on.
Once the parents popped their cannons, Gianna’s exploded with pink and her husband’s with blue, leading to collective confusion — no one had expected twins.
That’s when the mother took center stage, popping a balloon of her own and showering the area with pink confetti, declaring the baby would be a girl.
But eagle-eyed viewers saw Gianna’s excitement fade into visible annoyance, as her mother took the spotlight away from her.
Internet backlash: “She made it about her”
The video, captioned “POV: your mum had to make your gender reveal about her,” quickly racked up over 27 million views. Commenters were mostly unforgiving, labeling the mother a “narcissist” and blaming her for hijacking her daughter’s moment.
“She did an unexpected twist, which is common in gender reveals, no?” one user mused — only to be met with pushback like, “No, she took a moment to herself. Popping a balloon isn’t unexpected.”
“If a couple wants a twist, then they’ll ask for it. The mum made it about her since the ones going to reveal the gender were supposed to be the parents,” another commenter pointed out.
“She organised it and GAVE HERSELF a balloon to pop … jeez,” someone else chimed in.
Others simply sympathized: “Wow, what a nightmare, I’m so sorry.” One user asked poignantly: “Why did she reveal YOUR baby?”
Tragic gender reveals
Sadly, some gender reveals don't just end in annoyance, but in genuine tragedy.
In 2019, a grandmother in Iowa was killed when a homemade pipe bomb designed to shoot colored powder exploded, sending shrapnel flying. The victim, 56-year-old Pamela Kreimeyer, was hit in the head by a metal fragment and died instantly. The Marion County Sheriff's Office later revealed the family had been "experimenting with different types of explosive material."
Moreover, in 2021, a California gender reveal party triggered a wildfire that scorched over 7,000 acres. Authorities suggested the family could be liable for the costs of extinguishing the blaze, which ran into millions of dollars.
As these celebrations grow more extravagant for the benefit of guests and social media, there is no denying that they are also growing more hazardous.
