A seemingly innocent selfie featuring six friends on a woodland hike has sent shivers down the spines of social media users after eagle-eyed viewers noticed a "seventh face" lurking in the photo.

The creepy snapshot was shared in the Reddit thread r/ghosts, where users delight in spotting unsettling - and possibly supernatural - details hidden in otherwise ordinary pictures.

Although a forum where people spend their time hunting for spirits and ghouls is probably used to the odd freaky post, this particular photo left some Reddit users lost for words.

At first glance, the photo is just a wholesome group of friends enjoying a day in nature, with the caption reading: "A friend of mine sent me this picture from his group of friends in Chile."

They’re smiling, surrounded by lush green scenery, with other hikers trailing in the background. Cute, right?

But if you squint — or if you’re brave enough to give it a good second look — you might notice something a little off. Actually, a lot off. There’s an extra "face" in the photo.

Yes, you read that right. Seven faces in a six-friend selfie. Don’t see it yet? Here’s a clue: Focus on the bottom left of the image, between the two women on the left.

Found it? Good. Now go ahead and take a moment to scream into a pillow.

Once you notice that shadowy, unsettling face peeking through, it’s hard to unsee. Social media users have been flipping out in the comments. One person admitted:

Replying to the image in the comments section, one person wrote: "I am not exaggerating when I say that when I finally saw it, I got goosebumps and felt genuine fear. Wtf. I believe in ghosts again now."

"Damn, I wish I didn't zoom in," another added, with a third writing: "That is the creepiest thing! I did not expect that!"

"No joke, I feel like I teared up because that just scared the crap out of me," commented another, with one Redditor writing: "Legit actually creeped me out."

Another user described their oh-no moment in hilarious detail: "My dumba* was looking at the red thing in the bottom left corner. I was like uhhh, looks like someone was just cut out the pic… then BOOM, I saw it. Runs to hide under the covers."

But not everyone’s convinced this is a ghostly cameo. One skeptical commenter chalked it up to lighting and angles:"It's just a person that's also in the group with their face being hidden in shadow by the two around it, and made to look creepy with that intense blue filter."

Still, others aren’t so sure. Another Redditor said they couldn’t shake the chills: "It gave me chills, for sure. Usually, I just laugh these things off, or assume the photo is doctored in a way I can’t really detect, but not this time."

Whether it’s a trick of the light, an eerie coincidence, or something more supernatural, one thing’s for sure — this photo has left the internet thoroughly freaked out and has resulted in me not sleeping for the next three nights.

So, are you team “creepy ghost hitchhiker” or “it’s just shadows, chill”? Either way, maybe think twice before snapping your next group selfie in the woods.
