Let's face it, we're all guilty of taking social media just a little bit too seriously at times. But would you ever confront someone about unfollowing you on one of your online platforms?
Well, one TikTok user has divided the internet over her "petty" revenge on one of her boyfriend's friends after she learned that he had unfollowed her on Instagram.
Recently, Anna Birmingham was invited to take part in her boyfriend's friendship group's Secret Santa. While she explained that she gets on with most of his friends, one friend "hurt [her] feelings a little bit" after he unfollowed her on Instagram.
Admitting that she is "really freaking petty", she explained, "Now I know this is really stupid, but to me, the message that sends is, I don’t like you, I don’t care about your life, and the mere sight of your photos makes me sick."
Fortunately for Anna, she ended up getting this specific individual as her Secret Santa gift recipient.
And the TikToker could not let the "incident" slide without getting him something "very nice" with "a little splash of petty".
Part of the gift was... a Christmas card that "cordially invites" him to refollow her on Instagram. Genius!
However, not everyone agreed that this was a good idea.
One person said: "It's scary how obsessed people are with social media and who follows them/doesn't."
Another said: "How do people even have time to notice who follows/unfollows them."
Others disagreed with the implication that Anna was "obsessed" with social media.
For the naysayers, Anna made sure to provide a disclaimer, explaining: "It's not that deep guys!! [It was] a joke! He thought it was funny! [My] bf encouraged it and thought it was funny! [Everyone] laughed. JOKE!!"
Anna said as much in a follow-up video, explaining again, "It’s not that deep. The card was a lighthearted joke. I’m very aware that social media isn’t everything, which is why I am clearly exaggerating and making a joke."
She also explained in the video that her boyfriend's friend unfollowed her during the election as they have different political beliefs - which she said she understands completely.
Plus she did get him more than just the "petty" card - she also got him a bottle of Bourbon and a drinking game.
Unfortunately, he has not yet followed her back, but she did say in the comments that "he said he would consider it."
