Yoga can have so many positive health benefits - from increasing your flexibility to strengthening your bones and muscles - but these benefits can only be felt if yoga is performed in a safe manner.

However, after attempting to perform an extreme yoga pose on the edge of her sixth-floor balcony, one Mexican college student was left with fractures to both of her legs and arms, as well as her hips and head.

A picture of Alexa Terrazas, 23, attempting to hang upside from her balcony railing has since gone viral, as it captures the moment she tried to execute the pose - which would see her hanging upside down as the railing supported her full body weight.

Unfortunately, the move was not executed as intended, and at roughly 13:10 local time on Saturday, Terrazas slipped, fell 80-feet, and landed on the driveway of her building in the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, local media outlet, El Imparcial reports.

Paramedics from the Red Cross and the Nuevo Leon Civil Protection immediately tended to the student, rushing her to a local hospital, where she underwent 11 hours of surgery. She was listed in a critical condition, and how doctors say she may not be able to walk again for three years after being forced to reconstruct her shattered legs.

And this apparently wasn't the first time Terrazas has attempted the pose. El Imparcial reported that Terrazas' neighbors have said they would often see the young woman perform the dangerous stunt from her balcony ledge.

Following the incident, the Nuevo Leon Attorney General's office opened up an investigation into the fall, but found that the balcony's railing did not have any structural damages, determining that the fall was accidental and that the building was not at fault.

Family members have since taken to social media in order to ask for blood donations, and for any prayers for Terrazas.
