Taco Bell’s menu has always helped it stand out from the crowd. If it’s suspiciously cheap, sort of Mexican snacking you’re after, look no further than the chain’s collection of crunchy tortillas and salty mince - it’s unbeatable.
But, despite its many highlights, Taco Bell has always fallen short in one key fast-food area. Even though it has successfully turned almost every ingredient under the sun into something central American, their fried chicken has been found wanting. That, however, could be about to change.

To the excitement of their fans around the world, Taco Bell has revealed plans to introduce a new range of chicken strips. Tentatively dubbed “crispy tortilla chicken tenders”, the new dish will feature pieces of chicken breast marinated in a slightly spicy jalapeno buttermilk before being coated in a crumb made out of deep-fried tortilla pieces. It’s fried chicken, but not as you know it.

According to a report from Insider, the chain claims to have tested over 100 different versions of the recipe before uncovering poultry perfection. Reports also indicate that customers will be able to order the tenders either in a $2 taco, or separate $3, $4, $5 or $7 boxes if they’re just after meat.

Obviously, Taco Bell fans will be eager to get their hands on the goods as soon as possible. Unfortunately, while the franchise is starting to test the recipe in Houston, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, on Thursday, it will not be available on national menus until next year. Everyone else will just have to be patient.

Taco Bell’s news caps off what’s been a memorable year for the fried chicken industry. After years where established brands have dominated, 2019 saw breakouts across the board, with headlines stolen by Popeyes infamous fried chicken sandwich. The news that two of your favorite things are finally joining forces is always exciting. Whether it’s Batman and Superman, Alien and Predator, or chocolate and pizza, the anticipation of what could be great is ultimately worth it, even if the end result is usually crushingly disappointing. Now, it’s time to get excited all over again for something that, if it comes off, could make all your wildest foodie fantasies come true.

Apparently inspired by one of their closest fast-food rivals, KFC has decided to unveil a revolutionary new approach to fried chicken. Instead of serving the Colonel’s finger-lickin' food in its customary bucket or burger bap, KFC France has taken a leaf out of the Taco Bell cookbook and wrapped their chicken in a crispy taco shell. On paper, it sounds like one of the most exciting concepts to ever come out of a fast-food kitchen.

Currently only available in Europe, the crispy Double Tacos have still set tongues wagging. On the surface, they look to most closely resemble Taco Bell’s legendary Cheesy Gordita Crunch wraps, since each utilise both a hard and soft shell tortilla. However, in the KFC iteration, the shells appear to be separated by a layer of tangy tomato salsa, rather than Taco Bell’s signature cheese.

Though the new release stops short of being a full-blown, official collaboration, it shouldn’t come as any great surprise to learn that KFC is copying Taco Bell. Both franchises are actually owned by the same corporation, American-based Yum! Brands, who are generally considered to be the most powerful fast food group on the planet. Given that Taco Bell and KFC both fight under the same banners, it’s almost more surprising that the two don’t team up more often.

While the news that KFC could be about to branch into the taco business is certainly headline worthy, it isn’t the only tangent that French fried chicken cooks are apparently interested in exploring. In addition to the new Double Tacos, KFC France have also released a limited-edition fried chicken “hot dog”, featuring American cheese, jalapenos, hot sauce, and mustard. While it remains to be seen whether either of these creations ultimately gets the green light for a global release, it certainly seems to be an exciting time for eccentric fast-food fans.

Tortillas are all well and good, but who can honestly say they would choose corn over fried chicken? In fact, if we were living in a world where balance and nutrition weren’t an issue, wouldn’t we rather replace all breads, wraps and buns with something battered and crispy?
Fortunately, the test of tortilla vs chicken no longer has to be hypothetical. Thanks to the twisted geniuses at KFC Singapore, bland floppy tacos are a thing of the past with the introduction of the deliciously demented “Kentaco”. Featuring a marinated fried chicken shell and a cheesy filling, this dish is everything you’ve wanted from fast food but were too afraid to ask for.

Served in an ergonomic cardboard holder, the Kentaco is every bit as outrageous as its premise suggests. According to a description on the KFC Singapore account:
“(The) #KFCkentaco is a better taco with 100% finger lickin’ good chicken shell, stuffed with lettuce, tomatoes, and a robust mix of flavours from 4 different cheese - Emmental, Romano, Cheddar and Mozzarella.”
Reminiscent of the now-notorious Double Down - which famously replaced burger buns with chicken fillets - the Kentaco is a gamechanger for Tex Mex mashups everywhere.

Of course, fast-foods will know that this isn’t the first time chicken has attempted to dethrone traditional tortillas. Taco Bell famously caused a stir with the introduction of the similarly barmy Naked Chicken Chalupa, although its version lacked the Colonel’s secret blend of herbs and spices. How the two stack up against each other promises to be one of the year’s big debates.

Before hungry chicken fans start scaling the walls of their nearest KFC, it’s worth bearing in mind that the dish seems to currently only available in Singapore. According to Today Online, customers can pick it up for just $5.95 by itself and $7.95 as part of a meal. Whether that’s worth the flight to Southeast Asia is up to you. We know where we stand. In the delicious smorgasbord of Taco Bell’s “not-really-American-but-definitely-not-Mexican” menu there is one dish that’s done more than any other to simultaneously intrigue and repulse diners. Taco Bell’s chalupa totally ignores legacy of its Latin counterpart, offering a stodgy mass of dough stuffed with ingredients from across the chain’s diasporic kitchen. They have even, on occasion, replaced the doughy casing with chicken.
It might not be traditional, but Taco Bell’s attitude to chalupa’s has certainly produced some mouthwatering results. Now, however, the California-based franchise may well have created their overindulgent, anti-Mexican masterpiece.

Starting from Thursday, September 12th, the famous Tex-Mex specialists will be offering an all-new Toasted Cheddar Chaulpa at restaurants across America. Following in the footsteps of iconically weird options like the “Naked Chicken” and “Double Chalupas”, the new item comes with the usual assembly of customisable toppings, with the added bonus of a cheese-encrusted shell. According to multiple reports, the cheddar chalupa will cost around $2.49, and can be stuffed with a mixture of lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, sour cream, seasoned beef, chicken, or steak. The shell itself is a thick, deep-fried tortilla, which is then covered in a sprinkling of 6-month aged cheddar and toasted to yield a cheesy, crunchy crust.

Though the prospect of a cheese-coated chalupa is obviously exciting, it is not the only major change being made to the Taco Bell menu. The new item will make its debut at the same time as nine other options are permanently axed, including the Double Decker Taco, Chips & Salsa, and Fiery Doritos Locos Tacos. As heartbreaking as this news is, Taco Bell are clearly hoping a cheddary chalupa can soften the blow for fans everywhere.

What's better than a taco? It's actually a very difficult question to ask, and an even harder one to answer. Pizzas are delicious, that's true, but they lack the portability of a taco. Burgers are more portable, but you don't get the versatility of flavour. Fried chicken is delicious, but there's not really anything you can do beyond that level of deliciousness.
Yeah, in my opinion, tacos are right up there with the best of fast food.
But to answer my earlier question: what's better than a taco? Well, I'm glad I asked, because the only thing better than one taco is three tacos. Feel free to e-mail me later, you guys, about whether three tacos is better than two pizzas or a burger with some fried chicken, but for now, I've got a point to make, and an article to write.

Taco Bell is, of course, the only place you should be going for a good taco. Forget about the haters who talk smack about Taco Bell: they've got delicious beef, plenty of cheese; some hot sauce, if you like. Heck, you can get your taco in a Doritos shell, for Pete's sake.
We love Taco Bell, and I like to think that Taco Bell loves us; so huge is Taco Bell's love for us, they're constantly trying to add to and improve their already hugely impressive menu. Who could forget the Carolina Reaper Quesaritas, or the Nacho Fries that were slowly getting rolled out across the country?
But now, while they've rightly focused on quality, there's always more to be had, and this time, Taco Bell have seen an awesome way to improve their quantity at the same time. Three is the magic number in a lot of ways, but I never thought to associate the number three with tacos.
Well, now you can, with the Taco Bell Triplelupa. I don't know how good you guys are with your etymology, but you might be able to tell that the Triplelupa has a secret identity: hiding under that fancy name is three regular chalupas masquerading as one.
Don't worry, Triplelupa: your secret is safe with us. The best part about the Triplelupa is that it's the Holy Trinity of fast food; like its Bible counterpart, the Triplelupa has three distinct parts which are all different in their own ways, but all of which come together for the ultimate fast food experience.
At one end of the Triplelupa, there's nacho cheese sauce, at the other, there's chipotle sauce: but in that middle partition, the two sauces come together in what can only be described as Taco Bell synergy. This all happens as the beef and cheese make for a willing base, and I don't know about you, but my mouth's watering already.
Well then, what are you waiting for? Uh... probably for the Triplelupa to come out. It arrives at restaurants November 21 (that's tomorrow), where it'll retail for just $3.49. I'd tell you to grab your two closest friends, but I already know that you're going to try to take this one by yourself, and eat it like some sort of glorious taco sub.

Flour tortillas are, broadly speaking, fine. They’re the epitome of middle-of-the-road, run-of-the-mill, vanilla ice cream, missionary position snacking - never likely to offend anyone, but equally unlikely to set your world on fire. While being boring is normally exactly what you need when you’re pressed for time, sometimes it pays to have something a little more exciting up your sleeve. This is where Costco’s latest culinary addition comes in.
The bulk-buying retailer has come up with a number of game-changing offers over the years, but one snack that’s been recently spotted may just take the cheesy biscuit. Instead of surrounding taco fillings in plain old flour, diners now have the option of wrapping their food in tortillas made of actual cheese. Who says you need a grater to enjoy a cheesy taco?

The wraps, which come from Folios, are made with “100% cheese” and are also both lactose and gluten-free. Available in packs of 10 or four, the tortilla alternatives come in Parmesan, Jarlsberg and Cheddar flavors, allowing cooks to mix and match as they see fit. As the Parmesan variety states on the packaging, “Creativity Awaits!”

The new products were first identified by Instagrammer @sydgoesketo, who posted on the photo-sharing platform:
“I got these at my local Costco. They were in the cheese section by the dairy/meat. I think they’re super yummy and they work well cold especially with deli meat. They’re nice when you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to make your own cheese ‘tortilla.’”

The photo, which has been liked over 6,000 times since being first posted, suggests that the wraps may well prove a hit. However, another Instagrammer pointed out a slight design flaw after trying the wraps for themselves, writing:
“They are delicious!!! They fall apart when warm meat is added but I just ate with a fork. Can't wait to try with other fillings.”
Even though they sound tasty, this hand-held problem means that there’s still a place for ordinary tortillas. Still, it’s good to know that there’s an alternative if you’re feeling adventurous.
