A little girl has received an outpouring of support online after her mom revealed that her art teacher had told the child she had done a painting "wrong".

Explaining the situation, the girl's mom, Gemma Leighton, tweeted a picture of her daughter's painting last week, writing alongside it: "My 6 year old daughter painted this amazing scene at an after school art club.

"Her art teacher told her she had done it wrong?! You can't do art wrong!

"She was so upset as art is her favourite thing to do. Can you please show Edie some support and like her painting?"

Now, I am no art pundit by any means, but I think Edie's piece is gorgeous and wouldn't look out of place hanging in the Louvre.

And people clearly agree with me, as Gemma's post has not only received over 140,000 likes and 11,000 retweets - but it has also been flooded with messages of praise from Twitter users.

One budding artist replied: "1st of all it’s a great painting. 2nd, absolutely you can’t do art wrong. Too many ‘art’ teachers confuse copy catting what they do with learning art.

"I’m completely self taught. I didn’t want anyone telling me how to do my art. I hope your daughter does her own thing too."

A second added: "Edie, I will never forget coloring a horse blue when I was about your age and being told it was wrong. I believed it. I shouldn’t have. Why can’t you draw a blue horse? Don’t let anyone tell you how to do art. Math is right or wrong. Art never is."

Canadian actress Zoie Palmer added: "Edie your art is beautiful and engaging and provocative and makes me want to take a walk right inside of it. It’s a lot of things but it’s definitely not wrong."

Even Happy Days star Henry Winkler praised the six-year-olds masterpiece:

And Philippa Berry, wife of artist Grayson Perry, described the artwork as a "good painting".

One of Edie's biggest supporters even made her artwork his cell phone's wallpaper:

And fortunately, the outpouring of love was able to once again fill Edie with confidence, as Gemma wrote in a follow-up tweet: "Edie would like to thank everyone for the kind and encouraging support.

"She feels much more confident than she did this morning and will continue with her art and is apparently now opening an etsy shop (first I've heard of it) And a huge thanks from me too.. You're all ace."

Look out for Edie's masterpieces in a gallery near you!
