A teenager has earned praise online after sharing a series of videos themed around "things parents need to understand".
The videos, shared by 19-year-old Myah Elliot, call out the sometimes contradictory ways in which parents enforce household rules. One popular video, which has garnered more than 650,000 views, shines a light on parents' seemingly hypocritical attitude towards household chores.
“Let me get this straight. When we say you need to knock on the door before coming into our room, you say, ‘Well this is my house and it’s my rules,'” she said. “But when it’s time to clean the house, all of a sudden it’s our house too. Which one is it Deborah? You’ve gotta pick a side.”
In another video clip, Elliot skewers parents' apparently ad-hoc use of curfew, particularly as their children get older and gain more freedom.
“Why is it that parents just get to decide when a rule is in effect and when it’s not?” she said. “If you’re gonna make a rule for us to follow, stick by that rule and don’t just bring it up because you feel like being strict all of a sudden.”
In a third video, she takes on the phenomenon of parents teasing their kids over childhood crushes. She recalls when her mom found about a crush she has when she was younger. "To this day I don't want to tell her anything" about relationships, Elliot said, "Because I'm scarred from that teasing."
"Just because we're hanging out with one person does not mean we're dating," she later added.
And it seemed like many others out there related, if the many hundreds of thousands of views and likes on Elliot's videos are anything to go by. So what do you think? Have parents got some valuable lessons to learn from their kids?
