Man reveals what it cost to charge his Tesla for 75,000 miles compared to fueling a BMW and the difference is wild
A man has revealed the difference in cost to charge a Tesla for 75,000 miles and fuel a BMW for the same distance.
And the difference in price? It will shock you.
Having previously owned a BMW 3 Series, the Kentucky native was persuaded to upgrade to an EV (or an electric vehicle).
Of course, most people assume that charging an electric car should be much cheaper than filling up the tank of a car with gas.
But is that actually true?
How much has it cost to charge a Tesla for 75,000 miles?
YouTuber Andy Slye, a native of Kentucky, has been keeping a log of the cost of his Tesla Model 3 for the last six years since he first purchased it.
Slye says that after driving over 75,000 miles in his Tesla, he's used 18,656kWh of electricity. After taking into account energy lost while charging or idling, it comes out to 20,728kWh.
Slye than calculated the per-kWh in his local town, plus the supercharging cost, and revealed that this total over six years was $1,404.
The YouTuber did say to his viewers that energy prices in Kentucky are low, and he had supercharging credits to use too, so that contributes to the relatively low cost.
What was the difference between charging a Tesla and fuelling a BMW?
Given the current price of gas, Slye estimated that fuelling his previous car, the BMW 3 Series, would have cost him $9,353 across the same distance.
So, using the Tesla has effectively saved him $8,000 in fuel costs.
One comment on the YouTube video called into doubt Slye's relatively low mileage count across the six years he'd been using the Tesla.
"Your Tesla looks nice," they said, "but you do a very limited amount of miles a week. Oh, and after 10 years with your Tesla you may be looking at having to replace your battery, which basically will be as much as buying a new car."
Many viewers seemed to agree that for a person such as Andy, who lives near a busy town with lots of charging ports, the Tesla makes sense, but called into question if an EV would be as useful in rural areas like the Ozarks.
One such critic added: "If you have the finances to buy one, live in an area with a good climate for one and don't drive a lot of miles per day. However I think they would not work for the majority of people living in rural areas."
