A woman who had her face torn off by dogs has shown off the results of her reconstructive surgery.

Jacqueline Durand - who hails from Texas - had her face mauled by two rescue dogs she was tasked with looking after in 2021 aged just 21.

In a conversation with CBS News, Durand revealed that the dogs - a Pitbull mix and a German Shepherd mix - had originally gotten on well with her, but then suddenly turned and became aggressive two days before Christmas.

The incident saw the young woman grabbed by the dogs and dragged into the home of their owners, before they tore off her nose, ears, lips, and cheeks.

From the time the police arrived to the time they felt safe enough to enter the home, 37 agonizing minutes had passed. Durand recalled that the dogs wouldn't allow emergency services in through the door. A medic finally was able to run in and grab her, before rushing to the hospital, where doctors discovered she'd lost 30% of her blood.

Following the incident, the dog owners released a statement that read: "We are heartbroken by the tragic incident involving Ms. Durand. We know that she was injured severely, and are devastated by what she and her family are going through.

"We would never knowingly put anyone in harm's way, and were shocked by what happened at our home. Due to pending litigation, we have been advised not to give any interviews, however, we want Ms. Durand and her family to know that we fervently pray for her recovery daily."

Durand has since begun using her platform to raise awareness of the potential dangers of dogs, telling CBS: "I didn't ask for this, so I think that it's time to show who I am now and I can't be scared of it [...] I want for dog owners to know their animals and be able to communicate with their sitters how they are."

Now, in a recent Instagram post, Durand has thanked the medical professionals and EMT specialists who helped her following the dog attack, as well as so show off the progress of her reconstructive surgeries. "1 year ago TODAY I got out of the hospital after 60 long days of initial surgeries and recovery.

"I didn't think I would’ve made it this far the day that I thought my life was ending. Little did I know in 365 short days, I'd be back in school and starting an internship! I can't believe I'm here today able to talk about where I am now and where I was one year ago.

"Thank you all for the ongoing support, it never goes unnoticed," she concluded, prompting her followers to swipe across to see the results of her surgery.
