Take a scroll through almost any social media platform, and you will see countless people doing increasingly extreme things for likes and online validation.
While popular posts are, generally speaking, amusing and deserve the attention they get, sometimes, they can gain popularity for all the wrong reasons.
Case in point, this YouTuber who has been slammed online for dying his girlfriend blue in a "humiliating" prank video that he posted to the video-sharing website and TikTok.
Watch the humiliating prank below:As the video above demonstrates, this woman's bath was seemingly filled with blue fabric dye without her consent, leaving her looking like a very, very angry Smurf.
For completely understandable reasons, this guy has since been slammed across social media for humiliating his girlfriend and potentially putting her in danger all for the sake of a "prank".
One Twitter user wrote: "I know this is a joke but it still low key abuse, I mean he's humiliating her for social engagement."
A second remarked: "Ph balance is probably gonna be off the charts, yeast infection is on the way, skin is going to be irritated as fuck and possibly itchy, the dye is going to take forever to come off of her skin, and this is embarrassing for her. Like this is so ugly of him and not funny."
Other social media users pointed out how dangerous it was to pour potentially harmful chemicals on someone's skin without their consent.
One wrote: "Again men can only have fun and make jokes by making women the butt of the joke. Men are not funny. White men especially like to prank but violate people."
A second added: "He's not thinking about the effects it'll have on her at all and that's the problem."
Hanby is a 27-year-old social media star from Jersey who is known for his prank videos, some of which involve his family and girlfriend Jasmine Woodward getting him back.
This is why some people on social media did speculate that this seemingly cruel prank wasn't quite as bad as it appeared to be and said that certain details of the video suggested that Woodward was in on the "joke".
One Twitter user wrote: "This 'prank' is clearly a comedy sketch. 1) We never see the girlfriend get into the tub. 2) There is no way she could have sat in the water for an hour and not notice her skin turning blue. 3) If she was soaking, why are her hands darker than her arms?"
Another observed: "My wife also pointed out that she wouldn’t have come to the door wrapped in a carefully placed towel."
In short, the punchline of this video is far from clear, and while it may be billed as a "joke", even if it was consensual, it could inspire others to engage in potentially dangerous activity for social media validation.
