Many of us grew up watching the festive season staple, Home Alone, and have forever associated Macauley Culkin with his role as the adorable, albeit troublesome, Kevin McCallister. However, the child star's real-life trajectory did not go as many of us foresaw; plagued by drug addiction, and choosing to retire from acting in 1994, Culkin has been spending his time working on his pizza themed Velvet Underground tribute band, alongside other bizarre endeavors.
But whilst the actor has been notoriously tight-lipped about his personal life, his recent appearance on Marc Maron's WTF podcast saw him give his most candid interview to date. Opening up for the first time about his retirement, friendship with Michael Jackson, and his abusive father, Macauley Culkin truly revealed another side to himself.
On the podcast, however, Culkin revealed that he now splits his time between New York City and Paris.
He explains that this is because no one accosts him in Paris, "It was one of those things where I thought no one recognized me, but what it was is that they recognized me, but they just didn’t care," the actor stated. And demonstrating that he is clearly aware of his privilege, he added "I’m a 30-something retired person walking around with a baguette under my arm. I’m living a good life."
The Home Alone actor was more than willing to discuss his relationship with his abusive father, however. "He was a bad man. He was abusive. Physically and mentally," Culkin said, explaining that his siblings and mother weren't exempt from this treatment either. "He was just a bad dude. A bad abusive man. He was a piece of work."
"After I did Richie Rich in ’93 or ’94, my father and mother called it quits, which is one of the best things to ever happen to me. I was able to walk away from the business. I was able to say, ‘I hope you made all your money, because there’s no more coming from me.'"
Culkin ultimately seemed to be content as he approaches the big 40. "I live a very full, rich, and silly life," he explained to the podcast host.
