New Netflix movie racks up 12.8 million views in first three days

Netflix's latest movie release has racked up an impressive 12.8 million views in its first three days.

The new SpongeBob SquarePants movie titled Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie arrived on Netflix last week and has already become the streaming service's latest hit.

According to IMBD, the film, which is directed by Liza Johnson, follows Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob's journey to Sandy's home state of Texas after Bikini Bottom is suddenly scooped out of the ocean.

The main characters meet Sandy's family and "must save Bikini Bottom from the hands of an evil CEO," per the outlet.

The Sandy Cheeks Movie is the fourth feature-length SpongeBob film, following The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), Sponge Out of Water (2015), and Sponge on the Run (2020).

The animated film stars Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy; Tom Kenny as SpongeBob Squarepants; Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star, and Rodger Bumpass as Squidward.

Viewers most certainly loved the SpongeBob spin-off as it became Netflix's most-watched English-language film this week, according to a report from ABC.

In addition to this, the flick was watched 12.8 million times in the past week, proving that the Nickelodeon classic is still a hit with audiences two decades later. It also had more than 18.5 million hours viewed during the week spanning July 29 through August 4.

Many people took to their social media to share their reactions to the film, revealing that they enjoyed it.

"Sorry Twitter but I enjoyed the Sandy Cheeks movie Saving Bikini Bottom," one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), while a second shared: "The new SpongeBob SquarePants movie Sandy Cheeks Saving Bikini Bottom is absolutely awesome in terms of animation story is ok not every piece of storytelling needs to be peak."

"New SpongeBob movie was actually good when you don't have b****es screaming at your ear about it sucked," a third added.

Carolyn Lawrence, who has starred as Sandy for over 25 years, opened up about what it means to get her own movie after being one of the longest-running stars in the SpongeBob SquarePants cast.

Speaking to ScreenRant, she shared: "It's so amazing to me that 25 years in, I was learning things about her that I didn't know, right? That you could play somebody as long as I have, and she's still new and fresh."

"I was like, 'Oh, that's her family. Oh, that makes sense. Oh, she can do that. Who knew she could do that?' It was really exciting to me, it expanded my world with her. And then it's fun that now it gets to expand out into everybody else's, as well. I think it's interesting as an actress that the humanity ā€” I know she's a squirrel [laughs] ā€” of her relationship with her family," she explained.

The 57-year-old said that although she's always loved playing the squirrel, having her spin-off "deepened" her love and "understanding" for the character.

"You see more of that other side of her just being a sibling or wanting her mom to cook. I think it's an amazing journey. And now, I feel like she's gonna make me cry sometimes," she concluded.

Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie is now available to watch on Netflix.
