The Black Swan actress also caused heads to turn for another reason during the awards ceremony. Before she presented the best director award, she asserted "And here are all the male nominees", clearly critiquing the lack of female representation in the category. Guillermo del Toro was nominated for The Shape of Water, Martin McDonagh for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Christopher Nolan for Dunkirk, Ridley Scott for All the Money in the World and Spielberg for The Post.
This year many female attendees of the Golden Globes chose to wear all-black ensembles to protest sexual harassment and assault against women. The idea was reportedly championed by a group of actresses who either had experienced sexual misconduct themselves, or had decided to don the colour in a show of solidarity. Actresses who chose to take part included household names such as Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and of course, Natalie Portman and Mariah Carey.
