A 106-year-old woman has been released from hospital after recovering from coronavirus.

Connie Titchen, who was born in 1913, is believed to be the oldest person in the UK to recover from the virus. She was diagnosed with the illness, which originated in China late last year, after being admitted to Birmingham City Hospital in with suspected pneumonia in mid-March.

Three weeks on, however, she has made a full recovery and been discharged.

This is the heartwarming moment Titchen was discharged from hospital:

Per the Independent, Titchen, who is a great-grandmother, said: "I feel very lucky that I've fought off this virus. I can't wait to see my family."

Alex Jones, Titchen's granddaughter, said that staff took "brilliant" care of her, adding that the 106-year-old is "physically active and very independent".

"I want to thank the staff for all they have done for her during her stay."

"She has always cooked for herself too, although she likes a cheeky McDonalds every now and then. I haven't told her they are closed," Jones added.

"I think the secret of her old age is that she is physically active and very independent.

"She had a hip operation back in December and within 30 days she was walking again."

Nurse Kelly Smith, who cared for the 106-year-old, said: "It's been fantastic to see Connie recover. She is amazing and we've been doing our best to nurse her back to health.

"We were really pleased when she was given the all-clear. It's nice to see patients leave our ward after having beaten this virus."

When Titchen was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday, the staff gave her a round of applause.

At the time of writing, there have been 2,000,984 cases of the novel coronavirus and it has claimed 128,071 lives globally, per the John Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center.
