Donnie Brasco star Anne Heche has been left severely burned after a car crash saw her vehicle engulfed in flames.

According to a report by TMZ, Heche, 53, was driving her Mini Cooper through a Mar Vista apartment complex in Los Angeles when she reportedly crashed into a garage.

The collision, which occurred around noon on Friday (August 5), was quickly surrounded by bystanders who rushed to get Heche out of the burning vehicle.

However, rather than accept their assistance, the Psycho actor allegedly backed up and drove away. She eventually collided with a home, igniting a serious fire.

When first responders arrived on the scene they pulled a woman believed to be Heche out of the burning wreckage and strapped her into a gurney, then rushed her to the hospital. Per TMZ, she was then hooked up to a breathing machine, and her condition was reported as being "critical".

Miraculously, despite the horrendous crash, Heche is reportedly "expected to live", per the outlet. She was the only person injured in the accident; the only occupant of the house she drove into was in another part of the property when the car collided with the home.

The Metro reports that the car was lodged 30ft into the two-storey Mar Vista property.

Although her critical condition means Heche has not yet been tested for alcohol, the actor has spoken previously about her struggles with substance abuse.

"I drank. I smoked. I did drugs. I had sex with people. I did anything I could to get the shame out of my life," she said in an interview with ABC News in 2020.

Sadly, she is not the first person in her family to be involved in a high-speed car crash. Her brother, Nate Heche, was tragically killed in a horrific road accident that the actor later said she believed was an act of suicide, per The New York Post.

Best known for her 1990s roles in Donnie Brasco (1997), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), and the 1998 remake of Psycho, Heche has stayed out of the spotlight in recent years.

After dating Ellen DeGeneres in the 90s, she was married to cameraman Coleman Laffoon and then involved with actor James Tupper. She has two children, one with Laffoon and one with Tupper.
