At least five people have been gunned down by a shooter who opened fire in an apartment building in Ohio.
Per Reuters, the shooting took place between 1:00PM and 5:00PM local time on Monday, May 24, at the residential building in West Jefferson, Ohio.
Police were called to the scene at 5:30PM after receiving a call from a passerby. Immediately after arriving at the scene, cops began to investigate and looking for a suspect.
Cops found three victims inside the apartment building, while other victims were found outside, according to West Jefferson Police Chief Chris Floyd.
The victims' identities have not yet been confirmed by police and the exact number of victims has yet to be announced. Chief’s comments indicate at least five people were killed in the shooting.
Per ABC 6 News, Floyd said: "We don’t know whether it’s a robbery, a target, we don’t know at this point. Something brought somebody to a dead-end street."
"Things like this just don't happen in West Jefferson, or don't happen in small towns," Floyd told reporters on Monday, according to the Columbus Dispatch. "We found multiple victims."
Cops are now determining a motive for the shooting, and whether it was intentional.
In the wake of the incident, police have asked the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to assist in the investigation, with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office also on the scene.
The shooting comes just one day after three people tragically lost their lives after a shooter opened fire at a bar in Youngstown, Ohio in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Per CNN, three others were left injured as cops responded to the scene at the Torch Club Bar and Grill at around 2:00AM.
Two of the victims who lost their lives have been identified as 19-year-old Mikquan Stevens and 23-year-old Rayshaun Clay, WFMJ News reports.
It comes as a total of 230 mass shootings have now taken place in the US this year so far, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
The GVA defines a mass shooting as having a minimum of four victims, either injured or killed, not including the shooter.
