A black woman in Massachusetts has filmed the moment she was followed by a white man in his car when he said her presence in his neighborhood made him feel "unsafe".

The white man then demanded that the young black woman tell him why she was in the area as he allegedly followed her for two miles.

Watch footage of the confrontation that ensued below:

The incident took place on Monday when Julia Santos, 21, was returning home from picking up dog food that had been given away for free on a Facebook group in Groveland.

She passed through Juniper Terrace on her way home, and it wasn't long before she realized that a white man was following her in his car.

Concerned by the man's behavior, Santos tried to get away from him by turning into a side street and that's when he confronted her.

The man, who is wearing a white t-shirt and black sunglasses, says to her: "So what are you driving up Juniper Terrace for?"

"Actually. If you're concerned if you want to look on the Town Crier [a Facebook Group] someone offered a bag of dog food, which I have in the back of my vehicle," Santos replied, her voice shaking.

"Where? Juniper Terrace is a very small street, you didn't stop," the man replies in a bid to seem friendly.

"I did. I stopped, I grabbed the dog food that is right there and then I left and saw you follow me all the way here and I turned right here because quite frankly, I don’t feel safe right now," Santos replied.

"You don't feel safe? I don’t feel safe with you driving around my neighborhood," the man replied.

Santos then asks the man if he was following her because she's black.

"I don't know what color you are… what color are you?'" the white man replied.

"I'm black and that's why you're following me?" Santos said.

"That's good, you're black, congratulations!" the man replied.

In the background, a different woman can be heard piping up to defend Santos, saying: "What are you doing? I don’t like the fact that this poor girl is being harassed."

Santos subsequently posted the clip of the incident to Twitter with the caption: "I just got Karen'd? This man followed me home because I went to pick up DOG FOOD at somebody's house! He followed me all the way to my house so I turned on a side street and he said he felt 'unsafe'."

At the time of writing, the tweet has received over 9.5K likes and 3.5K retweets.

Groveland Police Chief Jeffrey Gillen said the video "deeply disturbed" him, and confirmed that a criminal investigation has been launched, the Daily Mail reports.
