An eight-year-old boy has been left in a medically induced coma following a horrific trampoline accident during his brother's birthday party.

Leeland Havensek from Carlsbad, California was celebrating his brother's birthday when he collided with his sister as they both played on a trampoline.

According to the Daily Mail, the parents began monitoring the eight-year-old after the collision for a potential concussion, but later that day they heard Leeland making a peculiar noise, and they discovered that he was having a seizure and was unresponsive.

He was airlifted to a children's hospital in San Diego 54 km (33.5 miles) away from the house where sadly a CT scan revealed serious bleeding on Leeland's brain, swelling, and a blood clot that caused the eight-year-old to have a stroke.

Leeland had two surgeries performed on him - including opening his skull to allow for his brain swelling - and was then placed in a medically induced coma, with his mother now revealing that his condition is improving.

As cited by the Daily Mail, his mother Maggie said: "They made that decision to act ahead and remove the skull to let the brain expand and swell without causing secondary damage. Everything they did was amazing and he's responding really well."

A GoFundMe page was set up by one of Leeland's teachers to support the family, and Maggie has been providing updates to concerned donors.

"Leeland is starting to slowly wake up. They are removing medicines and watching him closely to see how he reacts. His family is with him and he is starting to show signs that he can hear them. We are hopeful great news is ahead," an update read.

An image shared on the page revealed that the child will likely spend the next few weeks in the ICU and need to go through rehabilitation for years to come.

The initial description on the fundraising page further detailed the seriousness of Leeland's condition: "Though permanent damage has already been done to the right side of his brain, the current efforts are to protect and save the rest."

The family revealed that he will be unable to walk when he "first comes out" of his coma, and this may extend throughout his life as "his whole left side will be compromised."

The GoFundMe page has raised $43,800 from 490 donors at the time of writing.

Our thoughts are with Leeland and his loved ones.
