Drivers couldn't believe their luck after an armored truck stuffed with cash accidentally dropped bags of money onto a highway when its doors flew open.

A video posted on TikTok shows thousands of dollars fly onto the road near Carlsbad, California, with drivers jumping out of their cars to grab as much as they can, ABC LA reports.

The driver of the truck, which belongs to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, at first attempted to retrieve the cash before realizing he had no chance.

Video footage shows copious amounts of cash scattered across the road with other drivers running around and picking up as much as they possibly could.

California Highway Patrol says a couple, a man and a woman, were arrested after taking some of the money on Interstate 5.

One woman, who shared the video on her TikTok account, said: "This is the most insane thing I’ve ever seen. San Diego has shut down, literally it has shut down."

Another witness, Travis Fisher, told Fox5 San Diego how he originally believed that there had been an accident when traffic stopped.

"There was a bunch of cars in front of me that all stopped, came to a complete stop. I see all these things floating around and I realize it’s money. It was pretty crazy. Just everywhere, there was a sea of bills, everywhere," he told the outlet.

He believes that there were thousands of dollars on the road. By 10 AM, CHP officers arrived at the scene and began moving drivers off the highway.

Police were seen collecting the cash in plastic bags. It is not known how the truck’s doors opened, or how much money was taken. Cops are now demanding that anyone who took money from the road must return it immediately.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Curtis Martin said the truck had departed from San Diego and was on its way to a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporate office. Law enforcement did not indicate how much money spilled onto the freeway, but said most of the bills were $1s and $20s.

CHP Sergeant Martin said: "If you found money on the freeway, it is not your money. It belongs to the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) and this armored truck and the bank. It needs to be returned."

"One of the doors popped open and bags of cash fell out. One of the bags broke apart, and there was cash all over the lanes," he added.

Martin also said the CHP was working with the FBI in an effort to retrieve the money that was illegally taken on the highway, NBC San Diego reports.

"I highly suggest to anybody that picked up cash out here - it's not your cash, so turn it in immediately to the CHP office in Vista," he added.

Martin said that by mid-afternoon about a dozen people went to the department to return the money they had collected. It's unclear how much money has been handed over. "People are bringing in a lot. People got a lot of money," he added.
