An 11-year-old boy was shot by a police officer "in the chest" after he called for help due to his sister's father, who was separated from his mother, arriving at the home unannounced.
As reported by Sky News, Aderrien Murry called 911 on Saturday (May 20) on his mother's instructions after a domestic disturbance at around 04:00 AM.
The incident was confirmed by the family's lawyer Carlos Moore, who said the 11-year-old "called the police to come to his mother's rescue, he called his grandmother to come to his mother's rescue, the police came there and escalated the situation."
Two police officers arrived at the residence and attempted to kick the door down. Aderrien's mother, Nakala, opened it and informed the police that the man had gone and her three children remained inside.
Moore then alleged that Sergeant Greg Capers shouted into the home that everybody should come out with their hands up.
The 11-year-old allegedly walked into the living room with nothing in his hands and the Sergeant fired a round into his chest.
As per CNN, Nakala said: "Once he came from around the corner, he got shot. I cannot grasp why. The same cop that told him to come out of the house. [Aderrien] did, and he got shot. He kept asking, why did he shoot me? What did I do wrong?"
Following the shooting, Aderrien was rushed to the hospital with a collapsed lung, lacerated liver, and fractured ribs.
Thankfully, the 11-year-old was able to leave the hospital on Wednesday and is now continuing his recovery at his home in Indianola.
Moore continued: "An 11-year-old black boy in the city of Indianola came within an inch of losing his life - he had done nothing wrong and everything right."
Indianola City Attorney Kimberly Merchant confirmed that Sergeant Capers did shoot Aderrien and he has since been suspended from the force while an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Nakala says that her son is "blessed" to still be alive and that she wants to get to the bottom of why the police officer shot him.
"It’s not okay for a cop to do this and get away with this," Moore said. "The mother asked Aderrien to call the police on her daughter’s father. He walked out of his room as directed by the police and he got shot."
Nakala's former partner was taken into police custody but was subsequently released because she did not file a charge against him.
"When was I going to have time to do that? I was in the hospital with my son," Nakala said about this news.
Describing the incident as the worst day of her life, Nakala added: "I feel like nobody cares - that's my child, y'all."
Body cam footage will be inspected as part of the investigation, but it won't be made available to the public.
We wish Aderrien a speedy recovery.
