A fan has been left "covered in blood" at the Commonwealth Games after cyclist Matt Walls crashed into the crowd during the final lap of the men's 15km scratch race.

Another terrifying crash happened at the Games on Sunday (July 31) afternoon that saw Walls, 24, fly over the barrier into the crowd with his bike.

The accident involved multiple athletes and spectators requiring urgent medical attention. The race was subsequently abandoned as a second cyclist, Matt Bostock, 25, was taken away on a stretcher.

According to The Sun, one fan had to be helped away in a wheelchair and Walls received treatment for more than 40 minutes before being taken away by ambulance.

The accident occurred at Lee Valley VeloPark in London, one of the venues for the Birmingham tournament, and shortly after the race was canceled and cleared of fans.

The Olympic champion was trying to bypass riders who had collapsed in a crash lower down the banking but as he rode up, he clipped another wheel and went over the top.

Shortly after the incident, British Cycling provided an update, writing that Walls received medical care: "Update: Following medical treatment in hospital, Matt Walls has been discharged with stitches in his forehead, but thankfully no major injuries."

"Our best wishes go to all riders and spectators involved in the crash and thanks go to the medical teams for their expert care," they added.

Bostock was also given a CT scan which provided positive results and he was then assessed at the hospital to see if he sustained other serious injuries.

Eyewitnesses at the collision said that because of the gradient of the banking, spectators in the front row had been unaware of the crash. However, they did not require hospital treatment.

Walls also updated his fans on his social media on Sunday night, writing: "Thank you, everyone, for the messages and support! I’ve somehow come away with no serious injures just a few stitches and pretty banged up."

"I really hope everyone else involved is ok including the spectators that may have been injured," he added.

Per the Independent, the crash comes after another collision amongst cyclists in the games just the day before when England's Joe Truman suffered a broken collarbone during the keirin semi-final.

The 25-year-old crashed into Australian defending champion Matt Glaetzer and was knocked out unconscious, and had to receive oxygen from trackside medics.
