Diners at a restaurant have been left stunned after they were charged $25 for the staff to cut a cake they had brought themselves.

Celebrating a birthday should be done with all the extravagance possible - after all, they only come around once a year!

After a day of celebrating another year of life, having a nice birthday meal with family and friends is an absolute must, all culminating with the traditional birthday cake.

Often the worst part about a birthday cake is having to stand there awkwardly as everyone stares and sings at you, but what if you were charged for cutting the cake?

That's what Gigi, who goes by @vivala_blondiiie on TikTok, found out after she was charged $25 by the restaurant she was dining at because they cut the cake that she brought herself.

She took to TikTok where she showed off her receipt that had a subtotal of $113, but all eyes are drawn to the $25 charge for "1 cake cut."

Gigi wrote over the video: "When the server asks if we want the cake WE brought cut, thinking she’s doing something nice for us… but it was 25 dollars," and she added the caption: "I didn’t know this was a thing?!?"

The video has been viewed over 800,000 times and it has caused great debate amongst viewers, as it turns out this is apparently a common thing.

One person commented: "Totally a thing. Because then they bring plates and forks, which they then have to wash. But it was wrong that you weren’t told of a fee."

A second person added: "My restaurant does this but we have to let the party know there is a fee if they eat the outside dessert. Usually they don’t have a problem paying it."

Other viewers declared that the $25 fee would then be considered a tip for the servers due to the customer having no prior knowledge of the cost.

While most people are familiar with a corkage charge for bringing in your own drinks, according to the New York Times, some restaurants have begun charging "a cakeage fee" to cover the expenses of serving and washing utensils used to cut and eat the cake.

It also helps to offset the revenue lost by the diners eating their own food and not opting for the desserts provided.

So it would appear there is a logic behind it, but $25 for cutting and washing a few plates seems extremely steep.

As Marie-Antoinette apparently said: "Let them eat cake!"
